CREAM RISES TO THE TOP

Jesse Haines and Matt Deas had a late night on Saturday, replacing a cracked transmission housing. No pit crew here, as most rock-crawling drivers are their own personal crew chiefs.
Back in the Pro Mod class, the results took much longer to finish due to the large class size. In the end, things were much the same as they always have been, with Brad and Roger Lovell, Brian Errea and Dean Bulloch toward the front of the pack. Tracy Jordan, not surprisingly, was right in the hunt as well. The Lovells were fortunate enough to draw a starting position directly behind Brian Errea and Tracy Jordan, providing them with valuable information on the proper line through the courses. This good fortune helped them build a 20-point lead at the end of the first day and the duo never looked back.

Even with Haines and the Lovells racking up more wins, there were plenty of surprises. Troy Bailey was tied with Tracy Jordan for second at the end of the first day and finished the event in fifth place. Bailey is the kind of guy who can do more with less, as he demonstrated last year in the Stock Mod class. He was one of many drivers with a new vehicle this season and very little seat time, but most did not look nearly as comfortable behind the wheel as Bailey did.

ROLLING SEQUENCE: Jesse Haines was one of many to roll off this bonus line. The soft dirt at the landing allowed Haines and his spotter to right the vehicle and complete the course under time.
While Troy Bailey dropped three positions on the second day (due to breakage), Nicole Johnson moved up in the standings in a made-for-television finish. Johnson's fate was in her own hands on the last obstacle of the day, a bonus line that dropped off 14 feet into oblivion. The spot had put many great drivers on their lid through the course of the weekend, but Johnson nailed the landing with seconds to spare and found herself in the Shoot Out.

Now that Jordan and Scherer have entered the Pro Mod ranks, Shannon Campbell is also eager to join them. The Monster-sponsored driver is disappointed by the loss of competitors like Jason Paule and Bruce Zeller and wants to be where the action is. The rumor in Perris was that Campbell will have an air-cooled, Volkswagen-powered Pro Mod vehicle for the second W.E.Rock event in Cedar City, Utah.

W.E.ROCK, WESTERN U.S. NATIONALS
Will Campbell have what it takes to topple the Lovells' growing dynasty? Will his new vehicle revolutionize the Pro Mod class or ruin it as some say the original moon buggy did to the Unlimited class? Whatever the result, Campbell's first concern should be getting past Lil' Rich Klein's tech inspection.
