THE BIG SHOW

Obstacles like this one posed little challenge at the beginning of the event, but by the end of the weekend, much of the dirt had been dug away and the courses became much more difficult.
On Saturday morning, the vehicles descended upon courses constructed at Perris Raceway, which is owned by motocross legend and CORR Pro 2 stud Ricky Johnson. The event site is worth noting for several reasons: It is the first time in recent memory that a rock-crawling competition has been held in motorsports-crazy Southern California. In addition, the competition was held on private property, which greatly eases environmental issues. And instead of mad-made obstacles sprayed with gunnite, the courses utilized the natural terrain of the raceway. "The courses look tight and technical," Cody Waggoner commented prior to the start of competition. "There are a lot of dirt-to-rock transitions that might become an issue."

Waggoner's prophecy was dead on, as many teams dug holes and struggled to get their low-slung buggies over steep rock faces. Those equipped with enough belly clearance to crest the obstacles often found themselves on their lids, as the courses were situated on a steep hillside. Many courses were seemingly impossible, with team after team taking the maximum forty points. Before all hope was lost, Dean Bulloch came along and crawled the entire course to make it look easy. This truly was rock-crawling competition at its best.

East Coast transplant Jesse Haines is accustomed to the lack of traction and made short work of the bulk of the courses. In fact, Haines was using Maxxis competition compound tires with a full season of abuse on them and still finding traction where others faltered. The Torchmate-sponsored driver was followed in the standings by a slew of rear-engine moon buggies driven by Cody Waggoner, Brent Bradshaw, Shannon Campbell, Matt Messer and Rob McKinney (respectively). Haines managed to stay ahead of the pack all weekend in his front-engine single-seater. Another nail in the moon buggy's coffin?
