Saturday Coverage

Absolutely perfect weather under blue skies greeted the competitors of the first event of the year - WE-ROCK's PUT-UP or SHUT-UP Shootout. Huge crowds of spectators turned out to watch the competitors battle for top position.

Today all of the drivers ran four courses A1-A4. On Sunday the teams will compete on the B side courses and the scores for the two days will be added together to determine the winners.

This is the 5th year Big Rich (right) has been putting on the PUT-UP or SHUT-UP Shootout. This event is a little different from others because everyone runs together in the same class.
On course A2 there were two bonus lines. One was 10 points and the second was 20 points. Given a choice between 10 or 20 points there is only one choice for Shannon Campbell. Nearly every time Campbell faces a bonus line, he takes it and the same was true to day. He was the first competitor to try the 10 foot drop off bonus line on course #A2. Shannon came off the edge hard and fast, landing on the roof. Using the throttle he was able to rock and move the rig around enough to get two wheels on the ground. Putting it in reverse he was able to get one tire through the finish gates.

Stating this year this year there WE-ROCK is changing their finish gate rule to require at least two wheels to pass the centerline of the cones to be counted as crossing. That left Shannon with his rig on it's side, with one wheel about 12" from the finish line. With a full 7 minutes left on the clock Shannon and his spotter Mike Diew still had time to come up with a solution.

To try and get the second tire past the finish gate they tried to right the rig but the shape of the cage makes it very hard to roll back on it's wheels. They also tried rocking the rig back and fourth but could not quite get it close enough. As a last resort they both got on the end of the spotter rope and tried pulling the rig across the line.

Frustrating as it was they eventually timed out with the second tire just 4" from the finish line. They sure gave it hell while they had time. What an effort guys!

Team Red Bull's Dustin Webster is doing a great job of announcing the action this weekend. It's nice to see WE-ROCK stepping up and adding announcing to it's events. It helps everyone know what is  going on and where.
Matt Messer and Craig Thompson brought out the Trail-Gear Formula Toy for a weekend of fun on the rocks. Craig works as an engineer and when Matt wanted a way to shoot t-shirts into the air, he came up with this pressured shirt launcher. Using a Powertank this shirt launcher sends shirts over 100 feet into the air. After each course Craig would load up his Super Shirt Shooter and fire a few shirts up over the cheering crowds.
Team Slow-Speed driver Larry Zagger stood his rig on it's nose and parked it there. right up against the rock in front of him above. His rear pinion flange nut came off and he tossed the rear shaft when the rig came back down on all fours. This failure was bazaar because the rear end was working fine when he landed on his nose. It was not until he landed that the shaft came off. Earlier Larry was the first one to complete course 2 without rolling on his lid.
Becca Webster was the first to take a ride on the "Crain of Shame". Becca had the misfortune of being the first driver on the toughest course of the day, A3. The Crain was used throughout the day to recover rigs out of a huge truck swallowing hole right in the middle of the course. Many drivers fell victim to this incredible obstacle before a line was figured out.

For the first time WEROCK will host the 2006 Put Up or Shut Up Shootout and it will be held outside of Johnson Valley in Congress, Arizona. Off-Road.com will be on site to kick off the 2006 rock crawling season with daily coverage. And of course we will have a huge photo gallery following the event.
