Extreme action in St. George Utah
Todd Adams Extreme: outrageous, absurd, ridiculous, asinine, exceeding what is normal or proper. All of this and more was the norm at the UROC (United Rock Crawling and Off-Road Challenge) "Rock Rally" February 16th and 17th in St. George Utah. UROC has definitely came of age in 2002! This has to be one of the most awesome rock crawling events ever. Almost every rig tipped over at least once during the two-day event. At the start of the event on Friday, Craig Stumph, President of UROC speculated that he had set the courses too easy after a few of the best rigs scaled the wall on course #1. Within a few minutes came the word of the first roll, a broken ring and pinion and two broken axles. And this within the first 15 minutes of competition! Craig's' initial estimate of the difficulty was inaccurate.

As the day one wore on, I wondered if there would be anyone left to compete on day two. What I had forgotten about was how these crews are getting to be quick-change specialists when it comes to field repairs. Competitors bring plenty of spare parts and the skill necessary to replace axles and other broken parts within the time limits set down in the event rules. They only get 45 minutes a day besides the time between courses for these repairs. Of course, there was time in the evening of day one to complete hasty earlier repairs.

Starting this year, there are two classes for competitors. As before, the Unlimited Class is open to just about any type of modification that works. However, points are deducted for the use of rear steer. New this year is the Legend Class, which is limited to 36" tires, but teams are required to possess all the usual safety requirements. A full list of requirements and scoring can be found at UROC.Rockcrawler.com

We wish to thank Curtis Olsen of High Country Helicopter, LLC for providing the birds eye perspective of the event. This view gave us the ability to see just how large an event this really was.

A special hats off to the two lady drivers, Jennifer Little and Patti Dick, that proved they can compete right along with the guys. Excellent job ladies. Photo Gallery
