Laughlin, Nevada: Claiming his first victory of the day and ready to place three more trophies in the MacCachren Trophy Cabinet, Rob MacCachren came across the finish line here at the 2004 Laughlin Desert Challenge to capture the win. He meticulously took apart the field lap after lap and drove his high-performance 1/2 1600 car through a very rough course here in the Nevada desert. MacCachren is on track to win the overall in three different classes today here at the Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Cameron Steele finished fifth to the 2003 SCORE 1/2 1600 champion, MacCachren after flying in from Southern California for the morning race. Cameron was the host at the Supercross in Anaheim, California last night and made the trek back to the desert early this morning. By the time he reached the infield area the aluminum wheel was reduced to the size of a small plate. Cameron later told ORC staffers, "That flat tire put us way behind and we never really had a chance to chase Rob." Gerardo Iribe captures 5/1600 win at Laughlin
Laughlin, Nevada: Overcoming the trials and tribulations of desert racing and the life in what we live, Gerardo Iribe had everything together for this first race of the 2004 desert racing season. As the sun rises over the mountains that protect the Colorado River valley, Iribe has captured the win here in Laughlin, Nevada. He started the day with a 40 second lead over his good friend, Jeff Sack, but pulled out the close win by only seconds.
Gerardo Iribe claims the championship but in the interview with him after the race he said he owed everything to his co-driver he named "THE BEAST." After they suffered a fried clutch in the middle of the race, THE BEAST took over and pushed and chased the race vehicle during the mandatory SCORE stops on the race course.
However, it wasn't without drama. Required to make a complete stop each lap at the start/finish line, Iribe was having problems with his clutch/transmission and he and his co-driver had to get out of the vehicle and push the 5/1600 race car each time they came through the infield. Here on the last lap, Jeff Sack passed Iribe only feet past the start/finish line as the two battled for the win here on the final lap of this Laughlin Desert Race.
The Iribe Family is rich in desert racing tradition as the patriarch of this family is the famed Carlos Iribe who has won more 5/1600 championships then many teams combined. Seen as Baja racing heroes in Baja California desert racing scene, Gerardo Iribe has been raised as a small child seated behind the seat of a 5/1600 race car. Gerardo took a year and a half off from desert racing as his son had a serious medical condition, which required surgery. This weekend here in Laughlin, Nevada the entire family is here from Rosarito, Baja California to support the racing efforts of Gerardo Iribe.
