TERRIBLE'S TOWN 250: The Terrible Herbst Motosports Team charged hard throughout the day, however it was apparently not meant to be for Jerry Herbst and his sons. They battled engine problems in both the Trick Truck and the Truggy during the race. But in typical Herbst tradition, they powered on to both finish

Pahrump, Nevada – With the sun shining brightly on the Nevada desert floor, the sounds of wide-open throttles littered the race desert crowds. It didn't take long for Mr. Sunshine to warm the temperatures to a comfortable 78 degrees. Typical of the Nevada desert during this time of year. This is just one reason that the crowds flock to Nevada to watch the Best in the Desert Off-Road racing series.

The action started off wild as the 2003 BITD Series Points Leader, Dale Ebberts, put the Inland Truss buggy on the roof at the first turn of the race. Barreling down the straightaway and only 1/4 mile from the start, Dale was hot into the first turn and put the Series leading buggy on the roof. The crowd got him back on the rubber side and they lost only a few minutes.

INLAND TRUSS: After a long day in the desert, every desert racer needs a gorgeous honey to hold onto. Inland Truss driver, Ernie Castro Jr. shares a moment with his princess after he climbed from his damaged vehicle, which he pushed hard to the finish line.

However, the snake jumped up to bite them again just past Pit 2, and they rolled again. This roll-over resulted in the right rear trailing arm being damaged. It wasn't much later and they lost the CV.

Once repaired they were back on the race course and Ernie Castro took over at the controls. Ernie brought the Inland Truss buggy across the finish line in 6:10:29. Dale told ORC staffers, "Some days are good and some are bad." The Inland Truss team will debut their newly built race vehicle most likely at the upcoming Vegas to Reno race in the end of June. Look for a full-feature article on the new Inland Truss buggy right here at Off-Road.com in the month of June.

GARY & MARK WEYHRICH CAPTURE 1500 CLASS

The Weyhrich brothers beat the race course hands down in Pahrump, Nevada at the Terrible's Town 250. Leading the field of truck and cars by over five minutes, they jumped rocks and put the pedal down all the way to the Terrible's Town Casino finish line where they captured first place in the BITD 1500 Class. They were followed by Chuck Hovey in his Jimco built car as he kept a very fast pace up all day long. Only three minutes behind Hovey was the team of Jeff Darland and John Herder who finished at 4:41:06.

DAMEN & CASEY JEFFERIES WIN 1400 CLASS

The Jeffefries brothers lead the field for the majority the afternoon. Damen was heavy on the gas when he passed race mile 46 and was reeling in Marty Coyne who was out in front. Once Damen got in front, it was clear sailing as he put the Herman Motorsports Ford F150 into high gear and mashed the pedal. Damen finished at 4:46:37 fourth overall.

JOHNNY CAMPBELL & STEVE HENGEVELD WIN

Returning to the race course that caused him some injury last year, Johnny Campbell arrived to the Nevada desert to put the boots to some of the harshest terrain in the United States. And with conviction, both he and his teammate, Steve Hengeveld, stood up to the challenge and put the stake into the ground. Their rock solid finish puts the Honda Red Rider "A" Team in position to take their win to Baja next month and then return to Nevada for the longest race in the United States, the BITD Vegas to Reno race in the end of June. Look for this dynamic duo to continue the winning ways of the Honda Red Rider Team.

DANGER IN CRYSTAL, NEVADA~BITD STYLE

DANGER: You know you have to ask yourself exactly what's up when you warned about PAVED roads. Desert racers thrive for the dirt and a familiar saying in the off-road desert racing world is that "Asphalt is for....babies." Well that's not quite the entire phrase, but we'll go with that in the interest of the youngsters perusing the pages here!

MARTY COYNE: The 4WheelParts Trick Truck driven by Marty Coyne suffered some mechanical problems during the race and brought the old Robby Gordon Trophy Truck across the line at nearly 6:00 pm local time. Look for Marty and his team as they gather steam towards the rest of the season. Visit you local 4WheelParts store for all your 4x4 parts.

ON THE PIPE: The Jefferies brothers were on the pipe early and set the pace in the shootout here at the Terrible's Town 250. As they passed racemile 46, a friendly wager was made with El Jefe of ORC and the Desertbull, but by racemile 230, it was inevitable that El Jefe lost the wager in a big way! Damon Jefferies drove an incredibly strong race. Next look for him to bring it all to Baja and show his stuff.

iNLAND TRUSS: Leading by example, Dale Ebberts and Ernie Castro Jr. made great of a tough racing situation after a long day in the dirt. However, determined to get it done, they pieced their Inland Truss buggy back together and Ernie brought it home to the finish line in typical fashion. Dale smiled and said, "Some race days are good and others are bad. We are heading towards the Baja 500 in a few weeks."

STRUNK RACING: Bucky Strunk and his crew were on hand with their Trick Truck and put the truck through the racecourse for 7:01:30. As they crossed the finish line, Bucky was smiling and happy to finish the race.

The 8112 truck driven by Dave Morrison, Robert Miner and Howard Allen ended rubber up at mile 46 after a mistaken bobble of the steering wheel. With the truck on it's side and on fire, it wasn't long before spectators and race personnel extricated the racers from the truck and the fire extinguished. Just another day in the life of a desert racer.

BITD DESERT RACERS PUT ON A SHOW

KORY SCHEELER & LARRY JOB GO WILD

SCHEELER UPENDED: Kory Scheeler and Larry Job put their Jimco built car through the test at racemile 230 in front of a huge crowd of spectators. Scheeler nosed the car after a jump, but spectacular driving saved the duo from a roll-over. Kory and Larry finished in fifth place overall and fourth in class with a time of 4:53:53.

STEPHENSEN & STUART LEAD THE CHARGE

Jimmy Stephenson and Greg Stuart combined to beat the field hands down. They blasted through race mile 226 with a 25 minute lead over Dax Snow with riding the Bombardier DS650. They turned the throttle wide-open on their Temecula Motorsports/ CT Racing sponsored KFX 440 and beat the field easily. Wayne Matlock, riding a Suzuki Z400, came on strong in the last 40 miles to pass Dax Snow and Doug Eichner to finish second in the Open Pro Class.

In the Sportsman Division, Team ORC suffered a blown motor in their Yamaha Raptor 660cc, SandTech Racing, GYTR, mean machine at mile 5.5 and were sidelined for the rest of the day. Leading the Expert quad class through race mile 226 was Lynn Prosser riding a Bombardier DS650 to take the win in the Quad Expert class. Lynn Prosser hails from Flagstaff, Arizona and danced her Bombardier DS650 to a huge win.

SPECTATING IN THE DIRT~FLATBILLERS OF AMERICA

FLATBILLS IN AMERICA: You hear about these groups who dislike the Flatbillers of America. Even some in the desert community tend to shun the All-American Flatbiller, but here at ORC we support Flatbillers of America. They bring the American spirit to the spectating front of desert racing. Rock on Flatbillers of America!!!!

MOTO ABUSE?: Overloaded shocks? Guess not, this guy was rolling parallel to the race course and the chorus of screams and gasps followed him as he blazed a trail. Dude, you outgrew the at bike many pounds ago!!!

NEVADA FLATBILLERS: Rockin' the Nevada desert~American Flatbill style.
