11:00pm The Shupe/Nalley Show
The Cedar City event is now in the history books and the general
concensus is that this was RCAA's best event ever. The drivers and
spotters alike commented on the extremely tough obstacles and
praised the work done by Phil Collard, the course designer.
Coincidentally, the top two winners had "big men" for spotters,
which made all the difference on this course. Moose Nalley and
Lance Clifford were the determining factor for their respective
teams. When it was all said and done, it was Shupe and Moose who
dominated the field and turned in a stellar performance. It was Ken
Shupe who said on day one, "It's getting too serious out here,
we're here to have fun." And have fun they did, making the hard
stuff look easy, though even Ken will tell you this was an
extremely difficult course.
Phil can be given credit (or blamed) for the tough course
this weekend. How does Phil do it? It usually takes him about 200
hours of planning to create an RCAA obstacle course. His goal is to
make the course challenging, technical and makeable at the same
time. His course design has helped keep RCAA competitors at the top
of their game and while some drivers may complain, they also give
Phil praise for a great course. Also to be commended this weekend
are the RCAA officials - the judges and marshalls that braved the
heat and managed the crowds in order to ensure a smooth running
event. Without these volunteers, this event would be just another
weekend trail ride.
As noted earlier, Ken Shupe took home the honors of First
Place, while Mike Shaffer held onto the top spot overall. All
weekend long, Shupe followed Shaffer, obstacle after obstacle,
watching the overall points leader and keeping the pressure on him.
As Lance Clifford said, "I don't let the pressure get to me", and
it showed as they finished the weekend with very few problems and
took home second place. The official results are in:
1st - Ken Shupe
$1,000 Skyjacker Gift Certificate/$7,000 prize money

getting better, event after event and the upcoming Johnson Valley

a shot at the overall title. As always, Off-Road.com will be there,
providing you with the only daily RCAA coverage you'll find
anywhere. We'd like to thank Skyjacker Suspension and Goodyear
Tires for making this daily coverage possible. July 13, 2002,

Shupe and Moose Rule Cedar City -
Shaffer Three-Peat Denied
Ken Shupe cruised to victory by more than 40 points today, with
Mike Shaffer chasing him all day and finishing second for the
weekend. Mike Shaffer and spotter Lance Clifford were shooting for
the three-peat in RCAA, but came up a little short. Said Lance
Clifford, "This is the toughest event I've ever done." The
obstacles were extremely tough, but the heat this weekend was the
biggest obstacle for the competitors. The official standings have
not been posted as of this writing. More to come a little later, as
we gather the latest information. Stay tuned..... Send Questions

Off-Road Experience
I've been 4-wheeling off and on for about 15 years now. It all started back in 1985, on a tiny piece of coral in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, called Guam......
A friend was interested in getting a Toyota FWD, so we took one out for a test drive. During the test drive, we got the bright idea of testing it's four-wheelin' capabilities and nearly drove off a 100 foot cliff!! Well, we survived and my friend bought the truck, so I decided to buy myself a new Toyota (without the optional test drive, of course!)
