Rocky Mountain Raceway - Salt Lake City, Utah: In NASCAR they have the Daytona 500, IRL has the Indianapolis 500 and off-road racers attempt to conquer the Baja 1000. The National Football League has the Superbowl and Major League Baseball features one of the oldest series in sports, the World Series. In professional rock crawling they have the "Supercrawl." Known to many as the ultimate world championship in the fledging motorsport of professional rock crawling, Supercrawl has risen from the hills outside of a small Utah town to being hosted by at the Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, Utah. With over a population of over 2 million in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area the sport has careened from the rocks of Cedar City to nearly mainstream media as ESPN2 has televised the 2004 Skyjacker UROC Pro-National Series throughout the season. The legend and off-road veteran, Walker Evans has appeared in several shows and magazine articles throughout the year as has the brash young steelhorse cowboy, known to many as Tracy Jordan. The Steelhorse Cowboy recently captured the 2004 UROC Pro-National Series Championship driving his Twisted Customs tube-framed purpose-built rock crawler to multiple wins over the season beating out a host of top competitors for the top bragging rights as 2004 UROC Pro-National Champion.
Rock Runner Racing's Tracy Jordan was featured in a NEWSWEEK article mid-season as well as making the cover of DIRTsports Magazine two months ago. The DISCOVERY CHANNEL has been filming Jordan and his team for several weeks as they head into SuperCrawl III. Jordan has also been swooned by the corporate sponsors and only last week signed a deal through the end of the 2004 season with FABTECH Suspensions. Just another sign of the times that professional rock crawling is moving forward at top speeds. Nelson & Nelson Racing's 2004 rock rig "SCRAPPER"was featured in the premier issue of DIRTsports, as was Jon Nelson himself, after 30+ years of competing in off-road motorsports. From the grass blades of small towns like Vernal and Moab, professional rock crawling is going big here in the end of the 2004 season.
UROC Promoters, Mark Patey & Ranch Pratt have combined a team of professionals together for the 2004 Supercrawl III. Teaming with the Salt Lake City Sports Committee to market and build a stadium style arena in the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area was a monumental task for 2004 let alone orgainize and operate the existing UROC Pro-National Series events nationwide.
Rocky Mountain Raceway, only minutes from the Salt Lake City Airport, was the chosen location and the building of UROC's dream has been well-underway for weeks. UROC hired a general contractor with loads of rock crawling experience in his back pocket and the man-made rock pile is looking incredible day-after-day.
With large crevices, a massive climb over the top peak, and huge shouldered boulders to climb over, the best rock crawlers in the world will gather to battle against each other in a fight for the World Championship trophy. 2003 UROC Supercrawl Champion Jon Bundrant and Spotter, Larry "King Full Pull" McRae are not competing together as a team in Supercrawl III. Larry "King Full Pull" McRae will drive the Mom Nelson owned world championship rock rig, "Tiny," in Supercrawl III having enlisted one of the newest powerhouse spotters in the business, Kelly Lee. The Team All-Pro Racing rock rig, "Tiny," was up for sale only weeks ago as rising star, Jason Scherer and his crew were primed for taking the rock rig home to Central California after a deal had been worked out between Bundrant and Scherer, however at the last moment, Nelson & Nelson Racing invoked their right to buy "Tiny" back from Bundrant as Mom Nelson purchased her first rock rig. Jon Nelson later said, "Mom really wanted Tiny to stay in the family and that's the bottom line."
You can expect a host of other big winners from the 2004 season to be ready to take home the Supercrawl trophy. Shannon Campbell is fresh off a great finish at the final event of the season at St. George, Utah and that combined with his win at the Jellico, Tennessee event may put him in the driver's seat leading into Supercrawl. However, Campbell will have to contend with Rock Runner Racing's Jason Paule, Tracy Jordan and Don Robbins. Finishing in the top ten in nearly every event in 2004, they will all be coming on strong. Jason Paule and Tracy Jordan trekked to Nevada only last weekend to compete in the Alcoa Cal-Rocs Final event, which led them to a one-two finish for the dynamic duo from Rock Runner Racing.
Jon Nelson and his spotter, Tom "Dual Sport Hero"Geviss, will be there with the latest in technologically advanced rock crawling rig, "Scrapper." Utilizing a FAT Performance VW racing motor, titanium bolts and the winningest off-road tire in the dirt, BFGoodrich, Nelson knows how to win. Nelson took his first ever rock crawling win at the last UROC event of the year in St. George, Utah and is primed to shine once again at Supercrawl. No one can discount Mike Shaffer with his bad-ass spotter, Lance Clifford, as they have been knocking at the door all year long. Walker Evans has adjusted well to his new Campbell Ent. rock rig that came lock, stock and barrel with a new spotter from the Campbell Ent. camp.
Mitch Guthrie and his spotter, "Wonder Bob" took top honors in the Pro Rock Rock Crawling Series in 2004 and have had some great performances in UROC, but have yet to break the UROC winners circle all year long. Expect them to battle for a top finish at Supercrawl III. Dynatrac/BFGoodrich sponsored Ken Shupe, Skyjacker Sponsored Jeff Mello, East Coast Phenom - Rob Steffey, Peter Wells, Goodyear's Joel Randall, Moser Engineering sponsored - Aaron Dusenbery, Jason Scherer, as well as a host of others are all within striking distance of the top spot at Supercrawl.
In the Modified Stock Class, Rock Runner Racing's Joachim Schweisow and Brian Errea arrive fresh off of capturing the 2004 Pro Rock Superlift Series Season Championship in the Modified Stock Class competing against the previous multi-time champion, Dean Bulloch and Team Shaffer's Bob Standage. The GODFATHER of professional rock crawling, Craig Stumph arrives to Supercrawl with his King Kong age-old spotter, (how old is Ed Purcell?) and no doubt they be ready to rock and roll as Stumph's Maxxis sponsored - Rock Stars invade the Rocky Mountain Raceway. Winning a Supercrawl Championship can takes it toll on the toughest of competitors, as is the case with previous Supercrawl Champion - Amy Bulloch. After a grand year of winning in 2002 the march downhill has been difficult. With illusions of grandeur, everyone waits for the likeable hardcharging lady to take her Modified Stock back to the podium, however in 2004 UROC Pro-National Series she missed two events and ended up in 12th out of 14th positions in the season series. However, she can strike at any time so beware of this past Supercrawl Champion as she takes #211 back into the battle once again at Supercrawl III.
With the venue being a man-made course, you should expect the unexpected to happen as world championships are often made of those that merely survive until the end. Supercrawl III is set to rage on the rocks of Rocky Mountain Raceway under the lights and in front of the largest amassed group of fans to this point in professional rock crawling. Stay tuned!
