202x Jun Mihashi - Yamaha YZ 125 - Mihashi, whose team took top honors in its class in 1992, sat around the finish line with his broken and Baja-torn body waiting for the more fortunate members of his race team. After a 60 MPH get off, Mihashi considers himself "lucky lucky" after eating dirt in Ojos Negros. He hit the dirt hard enough to crack his helmet like an "eggshell." The only thing he had to say about his situation was, "Ikki (drink up)!"
252x Paul Kay - "I ran it off a cliff at about the 200 mile marker. It slid out from under me because of the rain, and then ten Mexicans came out of nowhere, took me up, and I took off."
252x Aaron Blood - "A Class 8 came right on my ass about 35 miles after Pit 4. He pushed me off the mountain side and a boulder stopped me. It tacoed the rim, and it put us back 12 hours."
4x Eric Brown - "We were the fourth bike overall at last year's Baja 1000. This year we made our way up to second, but at Erindera we hit some slick mud around a high-speed corner and went 80 feet over an ocean ledge. It landed on a rock and busted the handle bars and sub-frame. Some locals pulled up with a 100 foot rope and a set of handle bars from a quad." The bike fired right up after landing on its case.
4x Gwin Baughn - "I hit a cow and went over the bars. I was chased by some Federales out of Catavina. We were doing about 90 MPH. I eventually slowed down to about 5 MPH making them think I was going to stop. . . Then I smoked'em."
100x Tom Griehan - "No crashing at all. Everyone from La Paz on down was there to help me find my way to Cabo. They went easy on the booby traps and even when there were a few, they'd help help me out and shine the flash light to point me on through."
263x JIM - They spoke no English of Spanish. The only thing their team had to show for it other than a Baja 2000 finish was the broken arm of one rider.
308x Greg Hauser - "I rode a flat for thirty miles after the first 10 miles. It's all Baja, the trees, the cows, everthing."
549x Richard Jackson - "It was muddy right from the start. I never went down once. My buddy went down a 50 foot cliff and roped himself back up to the road," he said as a shower of Champagne sizzled on the hot exhaust.
549x Dave Olen - "I almost nailed a cow in Ciudad Constitution."
549x Paul "The Caveman" Lawrence - "I haven't slept in a couple of days, but Baja's been the most awesome experience."
308x Lou Franko - "I hit a truck at 70 MPH on a farm road out of San Quintin. Out there by yourself when you're all alone, there's a lot of crazy shit, farmers building booby traps, bon fires and all sort of other stuff."
309x Alan Roach - Baja Designs owner - "The last 50 miles is like riding around in an ice rink with rain ruts and rocks. The longest miles are the last."
297x Dave Holden - "There were a lot booby traps out of La Paz. Our three-man crew kept a steady and easy pace." Right before this race, we won the 24 Hours at Glen Helen.
297x Gary Heroneme - "I went head over heals just south of La Paz. They built a booby trap, and it ripped my rear wheel off. People came out of the bushes laughing and taking pictures."
275x Mike Childress - "I hit a station wagon that backed out in front of me at Ojos Negro. I just about shit my pants. The kids crammed into the back of the car were just as scared as I was. I tried steering around them and then the bike locked up and I slid into it"
275x Tony Motta - He crossed the border southbound with no motorcycle to mount. For the biggest race in Baja history, he was a racer without a ride. But he was a man with a plan. Motta, who claims to have never missed a Baja race since '85, handed out a full-color resume of his riding accomplishments to every prospective ride along contingency row. He walked the long road with little sympathy and little hope of nabbing himself a Honda - That is, until he hooked-up with a charitable Childress who took him in for the long stretch to Cabo.
"I hitched a free ride with them because I'm poor. These guys let me on the bike and I went for it. It was the best and fastest riding I've ever ridden in Baja."
1x Tim Staab - "From Ojos to Urapan, when there's no track ahead of you to follow, it makes it tough. At Tres Hermanos, the dirt was so good that you could just moto-it like a motocross track."
1x Johnny Cambell - In a teary moment with race promoter Sal Fish, Cambell said, "You did a really wonderful job Sal, I just can't believe you put on a race this big. This was the toughest SCORE race I've ever raced."
303x Kevin Gallaher (aka The Captain) - "Old? We're way over the hill. But George Villanyi rides like a 20 year-old. He's got it. He ran the battlefield out of Ojos Negros."
"There were three steep and slimy hills that were frozen solid on the surface. There were dead motos all over the place. It was ugly," Villanyi said.
Gallaher interjected, "Yea. But you cleared it man. I ain't bragging. But hey, you were reeling them in man, just like they were fish. Hell, the guy's never raced a day in his life. He trail rides like a son of a bitch. When he got off the first time, he said he wasn't ever getting back on. But he did."
3x Taber Murphy - Went into a corner at San Isidro, locked up a clutch and went down. At Ciudad Constitution his crew swapped out the smoked clutch, two tires, the lights and an air filter in 12 minutes.
312x Travis Whitt - "I owe a lot of it to my team, they kicked ass for me. The fans were great. They even set up a few jumps for me. It turned out to be a beautiful day in Baja. You just can't beat it. I've got to thank Tex Mitchell, Tim Morton and the rest of the gang. . . Oh, and the last thanks to my dad Glen."
447x Chris Haines - "There were lots of animals and jumps coming into finish. It was like suicide."
504 Michael Jakobsen - "We broke a rear trailing arm heim joint at San Quintin. We went through three fuel pumps. I almost nailed some big old white horse on the course."

1648 - Pulled motor at Guero Negro to replace rear main seal.
123 Dennis Gowey - Co-driver - "The strangest thing that happened to us out on the course was when the moon tried to pass us. We chased it down all we could, thinking it was a car. Until when we turned a corner and realized it was the moon."
124 Gus Vildosola - "Making our way to the finish, we began losing the tranny. About 100 miles out, we had to limp it in." Vildosola needed a push off the finish line.
113 Crew Member - "We rolled it off a cliff somewhere near the Bay of LA. A few guys just happened to be standing there drinking. You know, it seems to be the only time they really party in Baja."
