This was a situation found
unacceptable by Campbell, Stabb, and Street, as they soldiered on,
to finish the marathon event on top. Which is right where
Honda’s Bruce Ogilvie wanted them. Class 1500 and Nevada 2000
4-wheel Overall winner, Troy Herbst created a sea of red shirts of
his own, pulling the Landshark formerly known as "Truggy" across
the line, and to the title, in a time of 4:00:30. With his daughter
on his lap, Troy pulled the Smithbuilt desert weapon atop the BITD
podium to the cheers and applause of the masses. Quick to credit
his teammates, crew, and of course his father Jerry, Herbst was on
top of the world. While no stranger to Winners circles, or
Championships, Troy was well aware of the magnitude of their
accomplishment, and his place in the history books. And he’s
ready to go out and do it all again. Give that man a Beer! Day 6 in
Trick Truck went to Larry Rosseler in the Toyota/PPI Tundra. With
teammate Ivan Stewart looking on, Rosseler crossed the line with a
time of 4:00:29, one second ahead of Truggy on time, and one second
quick enough to take the Day 6 4-wheel Overall. While the numbers
have yet to be counted, the "i’s" dotted, and the "t’s"
crossed, it appears that Brian Stewart and Bekki Freeman will take
the title as the BITD Nevada 2000 Trick Truck Champions. Engine
difficulties less than 20 miles from the finish line left Stewart
unable to rev the I-6 Vortec past the 6000rpm mark, and seriously
down on power to the V8 DOHC powered Tundra. It’s been a
long, hard road for the Vortec team, with a serious crash ending
the Ragland/Johnson Trailblazer’s hopes by the midway mark,
and an assortment of bugs, and minor impacts stretching the
Stewart/Freeman truck to the edge. Be
that as it may, the 4:12:13 time of day 6 was "unofficially" enough
for the pair to put the big ‘Blazer into the winners circle,
and the record books. It couldn’t have happened to better
people. Quads-a-Flyin There was another name to add to the list of
Quad winners. Bret Greeholtz powered his way to a 5:18:43 win in
the Quad ranks, outpacing Doug Eichner, and Todd Hunter, whose
5:24:51 & 5:25:24 times respectively, were enough for a second,
and 3rd place finish. It is unknown at this time who the
overall winner in 4 wheeled ATV will be. BITD is currently
calculating these, and other results, and we will bring them to you
as soon as they become available. Last Minute Charges In an effort
to make up lost time, the "now or never" run to the roses by Jason
Baldwin resulted in a high-speed rollover, inflicting heavy damage
to the truck, and it’s occupants. Reports at this time have
Baldwin being Med-evac’d out to a Vegas hospital, where his
condition is unknown at this time. There are conflicting reports as
to the cause of the accident, and we will withhold any speculation
here. Another day-ender occurred when Steve Wheeler ditched the
Foutz Motorsports F-350 Super Duty in order to avoid two stuck
vehicles. Wheeler entered a ravine at high speed, causing massive
damage to the front suspension, bending a radius arm nearly in
half, and separating a shoulder in the impact. Point out the speed
and attentiveness of the BITD medical Staff, who were on the scene
within 15 minutes to render assistance. The Final Countdown As
racer after racer pulled atop the podium, there was a remarkable
similarity in their comments… "Thanks Casey, This was
incredible…." "By far the best race we’ve ever done"
"Oh man, this was just too cool…" Despite the long hours,
lack of sleep, and thousands of road-weary miles, the racers and
crews of the BITD Nevada 2000 finally got to take a moment of much
needed rest as the race came to a close. But while the racing may
be over, the celebrating is about to begin. Beginning with an
impromptu party at the Gold Coast later tonight, and the Awards
Banquet to follow on Saturday, the Nevada 2000 isn’t quite
over yet. There are as many stories out there as there are
participants to tell them. Victory, defeat, late night thrashes to
repair a downed vehicle…. The topics are endless. With 6
full days of racing to tabulate, check and check again, we’re
sure that BITD will be working well into the night. We estimate an
early morning-afternoon posting of the "Official" results here on
Off-Road.com. Be sure to check back regularly, as Off-Road.com
continues to bring you coverage of "The All American Off-Road
Adventure". Don’t worry folks, it ain’t over yet!
