WORCS ATV Nationals Round 5 from Riverdale Raceway, Toutle WA, June 5 - 7. The last round before taking a month off for summer break, racers were greeted with surprisingly mild Western Washington weather. The only puddles, ponds and lakes on the course were man-made! A brand-new MX section meant Friday's practice was important, however, it seemed to mostly point out there was still dirt work to do. WORCS got busy over night and by Saturday morning, things were much better for long jumps, fast corners and smooth whoop-skimming. Sunday's final saw great action, with battles throughout the field, with Pro points-leader Josh Frederick out with an injury. #94 Dustin Nelson got the holeshot and then ran hard in the front for the first five laps, clocking the fastest lap of the race by nearly 10 seconds. Several laps had great nose-to-tail racing between the leader Nelson and MCR rider Beau Baron. MotoWorks Can-Am rider Jeremie "Frenchie" Warnia, and Jarrod McClure, fresh off his run the day before at the GNCC event in Ohio, were right there within seconds also, and the announcer was going nuts. Those riders were definitely the fastest of the pack, for sure. Eventually Baron got around Nelson for the lead, and Nelson found himself fighting to hold 2nd and then third, but still running fast. Until the final lap, when he found a tree and had to limp it back in, ending up one lap down in 16th. Mike Cafro also had a hard meeting with a tree that ended his race, and John Shafe went off-course to check out the Toutle River. The Can-Am tent had a rare error, with #70 Brandon Smith coming backwards through the pits for work on the first lap and suffering an immediate DQ. The ProAm battle raged nearly the entire two hours as well, with David Haagsma finally able to grab his first win of the season, over points leader Dillon Zimmerman, Warnia's teammate in the Motoworks Can-Am tent. Keith Johnson grabbed the final podium spot for Honda. WORCS "Fastest Five Minutes" VideoHot ShotsClick on any image to jump over to the My.Off-Road Gallery and see a larger image.
