Santa Ana, Calif. (November 8) – Coming on the verge of one of the most significant races in off-road racing history, Off-Road.com (ORC) today announced plans for enhanced coverage of next week’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Known as the “granddaddy” of all desert endurance events, the famed Baja 1000 will be celebrating its watershed 40th anniversary beginning Sunday, Nov. 11, as more than 450 teams are expected to take on the nearly 1,300-mile route from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas in Baja, Mexico.

One of the largest automotive Websites in the world, ORC will use next week’s epic endurance events to showcase new technology expected to greatly enhance coverage for site visitors during the entire event. Part of Advanstar Communications’ Off-Road Group, ORC has partnered with two new corporate entities to make this expanded coverage possible.

International Racing Consultants (IRC) is joining ORC to provide live satellite tracking for a six-car team of Baja 1000 contestants selected by the site and its sister print magazine Dirt Sports. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art technology and computer mapping, visitors can watch the progress of half-a-dozen top teams competing in a variety of classes including the Off-Road Group’s Editorial Director, Marty Fiolka, as well as Chuck Dempsey and Mark Leverett in the #129 Speed Technologies HMS-Chevy Class 1 entry, the #213 Wahoo’s Ford Protruck of Dave Westhem, Ryan Herzog and Paul Perrizo, the #1648 EMPI Class 1-2/1600 Lothringer-VW of Wyatt Radke and Scott Graham, the #867 KORE/Mopar Dodge of Kent Kroeker and Baja legend Malcolm Smith, and finally, those beloved Firehouse Racing firefighters in the #1148 stock vintage Volkswagen sedan.

A second partnership greatly adding to ORC’s overall coverage is one recently created with World Communication Center Inc. (WCC). One of the leaders in satellite phone and computer service and rentals, WCC has provided ORC with a number of Iridium-based satellite phones and B-GAN computer satellite units which will allow several teams of ORC reporters the fastest and most reliable communications possible. In addition, ORC will attempt to broadcast the intercom chatter between driver and co-drivers from the #129 Speed Technology car live via a satellite phone mounted directly in the car.

Designed as a cooperative effort between ORC and Dirt Sports magazine, coverage will begin Sunday, Nov. 11, with reports from the historic vintage car parade that will run from Tijuana to Ensenada. The team will then move to the Horsepower Ranch for exclusive coverage of Wide Open Baja’s private Welcome Fiesta for that company’s annual Baja Challenge ProAm event. On Monday, Nov. 12, the site will feature photos and stories from Ensenada’s massive street celebration known as Tech and Contingency Day. Race coverage will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 13, with coverage from both the start and mid-point of the race. Additional coverage, photos and the winners’ story will come to viewers live from the finish line in Cabo San Lucas in another logistical partnership, this one with Wide Open Baja. Wide Open is staging their eighth annual Baja Challenge event, the largest “arrive and drive” racing event in the world. This year, Wide Open will lease and support 18 cars for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, with a list of drivers that includes television star Patrick Dempsey, television producer Bud Brutsman and NASCAR driver Erin Crocker.

“To cover an event as logistically challenging as the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is a very difficult one, as the Baja peninsula is so remote in so many areas,” explained Jim Ryan, Advanstar group director. “But, thanks to these great new partnerships with IRC, WCC and Wide Open Baja, the huge reader base that has come to ORC for Baja 1000 coverage will see it like never before.”
