Desert Assassins ‘Pistol’ Pete Sohren just misses a win in season opener - Parker 425 - 2006 Best in the Desert

Two of the Desert Assassins team made the drive to Parker, Arizona for the Best in the Desert (B.I.T.D.) 2006 kick off event, The Blue Water 425. Drivers ‘Pistol’ Pete Sohren, who won the final BITD race last year in the #2 Speedway truck and BITD defending series champion Jesse Jones in the #76 Fabtech truck both had great moments and it was ‘Pistols’ second place finish that became the highlight for the squad this past weekend.

In the Thursday qualifying Jesse missed the top qualifying spot by just three (:03) seconds and Pete was in the top ten in overall starting positions. Starting in the BITD series is determined by a short desert qualifying that stacks the top 20 in order of speed and at this race, with over 100 days free of rain in the area, starting position was key with white out dust conditions expected.

Last year Jesse was second at this event to start off his championship run and after lap one this year he was approximately 9 minutes in the Trick Truck lead. Not far into lap two the #76 lost a transmission and the lead of the race while team mate Pete Sohren was making a charge after an early problem. ‘Pistol’ took some extra time changing a flat as there was a problem getting the dead one off, not a bent rim as earlier reported; some issue with getting a lug to come off was the hold up. After the change he worked his way through the dust, which he claimed to be the worst in the 25 years he has been racing in the desert, and the competition to find him self near the top of the pack on the last lap.

While trying to get around an unlimited buggy Pete caught a 4 foot tall telephone box with a tire and would have to stop just a few miles from the finish line to change it. When the checkers flew Pete would be second in the Trick Truck class to start off the season and his chase for the BITD championship. Jesse would not finish but his spare Trick Truck driven by motorcycle aces finished third with his black body on it, some of the team joked that had he been running the DA style black body his luck may have been better. We’ll see at the SCORE San Felipe 250 in March what body he shows up with as he joins ‘Pistol’ Pete and team mates in the #16 Desert Assassins truck Cameron Steele and Clyde Stout for the second race in the SCORE desert series.

Next up for the Desert Assassins is the SNORE Battle at Primm where Brian Burgess will team with Daniel Folts in the 1600 class and Justin Smith and Cameron will team up in the DA’s Pink SCORE Lite car against the larger motor class ten cars on Presidents weekend.

‘Pistol’ Pete would like to thank Speedway Indoor Karting Facility, ATX Series Wheels, BFG Tires, King Shocks, Lucas Oil, Alloy USA, VP Racing Fuels, Tubeworks, Geiser Bros. and Ford.

Jesse Jones would like to thank FABTECH, FOX Racing Shox, and Toyo Tire.
