San Felipe, Baja
California - Andy McMillin took the overall win, 30
minutes ahead of the first bike!! Chris Blais took the win for the
bikes breaking the Honda Red Riders Baja streak of wins. Blais, riding the KTM factory sponsored motorcycle
bested the American Honda 1X team of Campbell and Hengeveld in the
brutal San Felipe conditions. The course was so rough that the
fastest off-road desert bike teams in the world succumbed the
overall win to a 4-wheel race vehicle. Andy McMillin teamed with
his dad, Scott McMillin to punish the competition here in the SCORE
San Felipe 250. Armed with the best in advanced racing technology
and extreme dedication to extensive prerunning and testing, Andy
and Scott McMillin proved that this San Felipe race course was able
to be beaten. Jason Baldwin pushed his
Trophy Truck to the extreme limits throughout the entire race
taking the win in the Trophy Trucks!! Baldwin commented at the
finish line, "We had to overcome truck issues throughout the race
to get to the finish line, let alone win!" Curt LeDuc pushed the # 3 Riviera Trophy Truck so hard that
the shocks melted beneath the intense heat of the punishing Baja
terrain. The air temperatures were not the problem. It was the
incredibly tough Baja terrain that played havoc on one of the most
successful drivers in off-road desert racing. LeDuc and Post
completed the race in 5:34:52 finishing 7th position in class.
LeDuc told ORC staffers, "This one was heck of a race. Conditions
on the race course were intense as we raced against the best teams
in off-road desert racing," said LeDuc. "That run down the race course near Zoo Road was really wild.
We had the right pace to win this race but in the end Baldwin just
plain beat us." LeDuc said, "We're going
into the 500 with a good feeling." Scott
Steinberger grenaded a transmission at Race Mile 18 after working
the huge five foot bumps in the PCI Racing Trophy Truck.
Steinberger blew by Race Mile 57 but only a few miles later he
suffered motor problems that sidelined him for the day. Alan
"Fearless" Pflueger pulled into Pit 1 and was done for the day
after problems with his race truck. Young
Gun - Bryan Freeman and Veteran Champion - Rob MacCachren took the
checkered flag beneath the Tecate Arch in San Felipe this afternoon
to capture another 1/2 1600 class win. MacCachren said at the
finish line, "The credit goes to Danny Anderson and Bryan Freeman
who raced most of the race. They are an awesome team." Freeman, one
of the latest off-road racing young guns commented, "I had a few
motor problems but it was great, It was rough but so fun and hope
to race more this year with these guys.” Class 21 Baja 1000 Champion - Joe Desrosiers was unseated as
the San Felipe Champion by Baja Motorcycle Veteran - Tim Morton.
Morton entered the race with only one goal in mind and that was to
take the Class 21 win hands down. And that
he did! Morton raged terror in Baja off-road racing once
again. ORC staffers at race mile 196
commented, "Morto came by us at speed with the rear wheel three
feet up in the air and he was riding like he was at
Supercross. Tim Morton, owner of Baja, a
world-class Baja motorcycle tour company, ran the entire course in
5:12:20 averaging 46.17 mph. Also in Class
21 was Kevin Johnson of Vista, California who finished second in
front of the defending Class 21 Champions - DP Racing. Kevin
Johnson completed the course in 5:28:31 approximately four minutes
ahead of the Baja 1000 Champions to take a podium finish.
San Felipe takes its toll on famed desert
racers! |
The word is that the course is tough. Steinberger,
Playtech Racing, Pfluger & Vildolsola are broken...and that's
not it. Many race teams are doing all they can just to finish the
race this afternoon. The first 60 miles of this 2005 San Felipe
SCORE race course has taken its toll on the best desert racers in
the world. Desert racing carnage is strewn from Race Mile 3 through
the Borrego Pits. Many teams on the strap
this afternoon, limping there way back to San Felipe and then move
on home. Unofficial Scores OVERALL WIN - ANDY MCMILLIN
