Carl Renezeder holds off Johnny Greaves in Pro-4
Anticipation was high at the track for more great racing in Round 6 at Crandon. Sunday is also the day of the Governor’s Cup Challenge which pits Pro-4, Pro-2 and Sportsman 2 trucks against each other. This race has been a fan favorite for 11 years. As reported earlier Andy McMillin was brought in to replace the injured Larry Gourlie in the U.S. Marines Pro-2 truck for Team USA. In a strange twist of events McMillin injured his ACL getting ready for the race on Saturday. His father Scott McMillin took over the driving duties on Sunday to get the truck on the track. The races were run in a different order to allow the trucks entered into the Governor’s Cup Challenge time to prepare for the late afternoon start.

Brian Hinman had a pair of 2nds in Pro-2

The Pro-4 trucks were first off the line for the CORR divisions. Carl Renezeder used his experience to get the holeshot over the rest of the field. Johnny Greaves was running a close second never letting Renezeder build a lead. On lap 4 Greaves made his move getting to the inside of Renezeder coming out of the barn jump corner. Renezeder squeezed Greaves to the inside coming down the hill thereby maintaining his lead. Jason Baldwin was running in 3 rd a few seconds back of the leaders at mid-race. Greaves was able to make the pass on the front straight, getting by Renezeder for the lead. Renezeder’s day would end with a blown engine later in the lap coming over the finish line. Baldwin closed the gap to 1 st after Greaves transmission was reduced to 2 nd and 4 th gears. Greaves was unable to maintain the pace and Baldwin got by and pulled away. At the checkers it was Jason Baldwin with the win, Greaves hanging on for 2 nd, and Josh Baldwin taking 3 rd by default since he was the last truck still running at the end. Baldwin commented after the race,” I was able to save my tires till the end by letting the leaders sort it out.”

Ross Hoek came away with 2nd in Round 6

The Pro-2 race had a first time leader when the green flag dropped. Todd LeDuc grabbed the early lead only to loose it when he went deep into the gravel pit turn. Scott Taylor capitalized on the mistake and took over the top spot. LeDuc settled into 2 nd place for a few laps before being shown the black flag for an incident on the first lap. Brian Hinman accepted 2 nd several second behind Taylor. Most of the action was back in the pack as Evan Evans was moving through the field. Kevin Probst ran in 3 rd for several laps before Evans began applying heavy pressure. Probst was unable to hold off Evans and dropped back to 4 th. Scott Douglas was also making his way through the field but there was not enough time to get to the front. After taking the win Taylor said,”I knew my experience would catch up, I just needed to be patient.” His comment was in reference to LeDuc getting the jump off the line. Hinman followed in 2 nd with Evans hanging on for 3 rd.

Gary Nierop scored his first super buggy win in Round 6

Sportsman 2 trucks toed the line for the third race of the day. In a mirror image of Round 5, Dan Baudoux blasted into the lead from the start. Ben Wandahsega and Gordon Zima gave chase but Baudoux checked out again. Ross Hoek had a poor start but had a fast truck and was up to 4 th by the 4 th lap. He used an inside move in the gravel pit to leap into second as Wandahsega and Zima got together slowing them both. Wandahsega would recover first and move into 3 rd postion. Baudoux stayed out in front for the easy win with Hoek 2 nd and Wandahsega 3 rd.

Mike Vanden Huevel took his first podium with a 3rd place finish in light buggy

Art Schmitt came out of turn one first to lead the Pro-Lite field to the green flag. However, contact on the first lap would relegate him further back in the field. Randy Eller took the only Chevrolet in the field to the top spot only to be passed by a charging Kyle LeDuc on the next lap. Chad Hord was also able to get by Eller setting him up in the gravel pit turn. LeDuc initially built a small lead but Hord was inching closer as the laps counted down. LeDuc eventually slowed giving the lead up to Hord. Eller caught LeDuc on lap 7 and took over 2 nd position. Rookie Shayne Pagles ran a great race holding on to the 3 rd spot before getting passed by Art Schmitt in the last turn. Contact was made between the two but Schmitt held on for 3 rd. Hord repeated as Pro-Lite winner with Eller taking 2 nd.

The light buggies had a repeat winner with Craig Metz taking another win. Mike Vanden Huevel lead most of the race before giving up the lead but held on for 3 rd. Greg Stingle took 2 nd for his best finish of 2005. Jeff Virnig and Ben O’Connell were involved in some contact over the Barn Jump with Virnig getting the worse end of it ending up on his lid. The single buggy class had some familiar names at the top with Mark Steinhardt taking the win. He lead most of Round 5 before falling out of the race with difficulties. Steve Socha ran a strong 2 nd most of the race but was passed by Michael Seefeldt on the last lap. Gary Nierop took his first super buggy win in Round 6. He ran up front for the last 9 laps to take the checkers. Points leader Aaron Hawley had another strong run taking 2 nd and Todd Wallace took third for his best finish of 2005. Yesterday’s winner Corry Heynen held the lead briefly but got shuffled back to 4 th at the end. After losing the lead midway through the stock truck race in Round 5, Dave Waldvogel lead all 10 laps to take the win over Keith Steele who finished second. The best racing was for 3 rd between Al Konitzer and Scott Beauchamp. It took Beauchamp until lap 9 to get by Konitzer after running on his bumper nearly the entire race. Beauchamp would pull away after getting by to take third.

Mark Steinhardt cruised to the win in single buggy

The big event of the day was the Governor’s Cup Challenge. Scott Taylor took advantage of the head start for the fastest 2 wheel drive trucks by taking the lead over Scott Douglas and Kevin Probst. Jason Baldwin lead the rest of the trucks through turn 1 using his 4 wheel drive to his advantage. He made his way through the field taking over the lead on lap 6 of the 10 lap race. The Pro-4’s of Josh Baldwin and Curt LeDuc gave chase but could not close on Jason. It appeared that Jason would cruise to the win but contact with Ross Hoek in the final corner brought him to a stop in the entrance of the turn. Josh Baldwin was unable to avoid making contact and it was a scramble to the finish line. Josh was able to get away first taking his 2 nd short track win making it a big payday. Curt LeDuc was also able to get by taking 2 nd. Jason was able to get over the line in 3 rd but missed his chance at the trophy. Scott Taylor was the first Pro-2 and Mike Oberg was the first Sportsman 2 truck. All in all it was a great race with a lot of excitement.
