Pflueger Wins Baja 500!! Honda's Hengeveld Wins Motos2004 SCORE Desert Series

Ensenada, Baja California - Alan Pflueger roared back into Baja capturing the Trophy ruck win over the rest of the field. Pflueger said, "This is awesome, with this crew I will take on any team, anywhere with any vehicle." Pflueger screamed from the top of his Trophy Truck, "I love Baja. The people are great and this land is wonderful."

Pflueger climbed from the driver's seat and stood on top of the roof holding his arms in the air exhaulting what is a big win for Pflueger Racing. He yelled from the top of the Trophy Truck roof, "This is only the beginning!"

Alan Pflueger put the BFGoodrich Baja T/A under the extreme test today here on the Baja Peninsula scoring yet another Baja Championship win for BFGoodrich. Pfearless Pflueger ran the entire race without a single flat running full-speed through the Baja terrain. Pflueger said, "Mike didn't have to get out of the vehicle one time today. BFGoodrich tires are the best!!!"

Trophy Trucks & Class 1's an hour out of the finish line

Ensenada, Baja California -- The Hawaiian, Pfearless Pflueger, currently is leading through the Jamau checkpoint pushing his Trophy Truck to the limit as he leads the Truggy overall by 8 minutes. Pflueger cleared the Jamau checkpoint in under 7 hours averaging approximately 45 miles per hour.

In third is Jerry Whelchel who took over for Mark Post near the half-way point and he's making up time as if he were piloting the Space Shuttle. Through Jamau, Whelchel was only approximately 9 minutes behind Pflueger.

In fourth is Jason Baldwin driving the #66 Baldwin Racing truck and in fifth is Juan Ibarra in the #32 Trophy Truck. Following in sixth position is Josh Baldwin in the #86 Trophy Truck and in seventh is Gustav Vildosola/MacCachren in the Mexican Logistics truck.

Ruben Martin claims Class 25 Pro-ATV

Ensenada, Baja California -- Ruben Martin rode wide-open to finish far ahead of his nearest competitor. He was never caught by the four-wheel vehicles and rode across the finish line to the waiting crowd of race team members who sucked him into the vortex of congratulations. The local Ensenada crowd roared to life as the Mexican took first place.

Contreras 101x wins Class 21

Ensenada, Baja California--Alfredo Contreras finished approximately 25 minutes ahead of DP Racing's Joe Desrosiers on the 100X Class 21 moto. Desrosiers finished second ahead of teammate Dean Sharpe on the 103X moto in third place.

DP Racing through Jamau at speed!!!!

Ensenada, Baja California -- Joe Desrosiers put the Yamaha motorcycle through the paces as did his teammates so far this afternoon. Just reported in via reliable sources with timing information show DP Racing's 100X through Jamau at 7:53:03 averaging 59.382 miles per hour. DP Racing's second team lead by Dean Sharp on the 103X are listed only two minutes behind the 100X team. The 100X team is currently 25th overall and the 103X is 26th overall amongst all racers.

Race speeds averaging 40 miles per hour to San Telmo

Ensenada, Baja California -- Sources close to ORC have reported that the overall race speeds through San Telmo are only 40 miles per hour and there is discussion about checkpoint times being lengthened as the 2004 Baja 500 may be much slower than previously anticipated.

Roeseler/Troy Herbst leads in Truggy at Race Mile 228

Ensenada, Baja California -- Dakar Rally and Baja off-road racing veteran Larry Roeseler leads Mark McMillin by ten minutes at the half-way mark where racers are battling against man and machine in the wilds of Baja.

ESPN's Cameron Steele is here at the finish line with a crashed 1/2 1600 race car. He told ORC staffers that he was "punted" by the #229 Pro-Truck. The Driver-of-Record, Tom Koch and/or his co-drivers apparently hit Steele at the Ojos Negros checkpoint. This crash resulted in the 1/2 1600 car being damaged beyond repair after only a short time in this race. Steele was forced out of the race and was here filing an official protest after being taken out of the race by this crash.

Johnny Campbell/Steve Hengeveld win the Baja 500

Ensenada, Baja California -- Famed Honda Red Riders, Johnny Campbell & Steve Hengeveld arrived to the Antonio Palocios stadium in winning tradition once again capturing the mystique of the Baja Pensinsula. Campbell & Hengeveld add additional hardware to the Honda Trophy cabinet by capturing another title in Baja.

This Baja 500 win for Campbell & Hengeveld equals the current record for multiple overall championships in motorcycles. They have each now won five Baja 500 championships tying Paul Krause and Bruce Ogilvie who are in the record books with five each.

Bilstein Race Update 1:00 PM

Ensenada, Baja California -- At racemile 227, in the San Telmo pit area, Larry Ragland & Alan "Pfearless" Pflueger were battling back and forth for the lead. At the pit, Ragland was out of the pit with a four minute actual lead over Pflueger, however Pflearless Pflueger still has a 30 second lead based on time. Tim Herbst was third behind Ragland trailing by approximately 19 minutes.

The San Telmo pit is the so-called halfway point of this Baja 500. The race is well underway and unfolding on the Baja Peninsula.

ORC staffers are set up at the Antonio Palacios stadium in central Ensenada directly at the finish line. Stay tuned for finishing times and the first racers to enter the stadium, which is expected to be Honda's Red Riders. Rumor has it Honda passed the word that they will arrive at the finish line at 2:30 p.m.

 
Bilstein Race Update 11:00 AM

Ensenada, Baja California -- The last vehicle, Bruce Meyers #1967 Manxter is off the start line here in Ensenada. In the first few hours of the race there are very few incidents to report other than two rollovers at racemile 11.2 and 13.5, both which are reporting no injuries.

Bilstein Race Update 8:00 AM

Ensenada, Baja California -- The roar of Trophy Trucks and Class 1's are prevelant as the first four wheel vehicle is set to leave the line in 45 minutes. With the start time set for 8:45 a.m. there has been plenty of time for the fans to position themselves for a great day of spectating.

The SCORE operations radio frequency has been busy at a blistering pace reporting that Ojos Negros is over-crowded with spectators. Ensenada police have been dispatched to clear the road before the four-wheel vehicles blaze the trail.

Ensenada, Baja California -- Honda's thumpers have been running up and down the streets of Ensenada near the start line as the crowds continue to roll in here at the Baja 500. With grey cloud cover blocking out the early morning sun, preparations are underway by Ensenada's finest for the early morning start of this race. The first motos are off the line including Honda's Baja Champions - Johnny Campbell & Steve Hengeveld. The wash through the downtown Ensenada is lined with throngs of spectators as the Baja 500 is off to a great start.
