• On a Rusted-Out Huffy 10 Speed |
The 2001 Baja 1000 was an epic journey into the life adventures of all who participated. From the Mexican kid on his rusted-out Huffy 10 speed chasing down dogs off the race course just before Rod Hall passed through the Ojos Negroes mud hole in his Old Glory Hummer, to Ed Pearlman's honorary twirl of the checkered flag as Honda's Johnny Campbell closed in on his fifth-consecutive overall win for the race aboard his XR650, the race and lifestyle of all those who have lived it will continue on, forever into the abyss of off-road racing memories. To commemorate the memories of us all, continue with ORC's encyclopedia of Baja adventures and catapult the torch to the ever-increasing masses of the world, we've thrown together all the responses we've received regarding the race and have posted them here. Though this will never capture the real life of Baja, it will give others a glimpse at a moment in time that will undoubtedly be shared around the eternal campfire of off-road racers everywhere. For future races, our aim here at ORC will be to provide a forum for those of you out there to share your tales, grease the palms of your sponsors and keep the spirit of Baja alive on the internet for the world to read. Sincerely, Fidel Gonzales
Aaron Reynard : Outlaw Racing chase truck/pit crew team. Awesome experience. Very fun. We got stuck in some shin deep silt and got behind by over 6 hours. There was a crash behind us, and a protruck backed onto the front of a 16 car, blocking the race corse. So no one could get to the car. We also had a head bolt break. We had a little loss of performance, but kept going. We finally crossed the finish line mid morning on sat. If you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to answer them. AARON Thanks to you! That is what I wanted to say, because you have allowed me to experience the 2001 Baja 1000, from work, and home. As a team member of the BFG Relay Team (Relay #8), I unfortunately could not make it this year due to a new job. All day long at work I would hit the Offroad.com website and get updated, you guys have surely satisfied my curiosity and interest. It is very difficult for me, when I am always used to being on top of the race when I work the radio, however your team has done a superb job of feeding the info. I think they deserve some praise (and lots of Tecates), so make sure you let them know. Thank you Offroad.com for saving me from the perrils of "No Baja 1000 information". Kind Regards,
Willie Valdivia

Relay #8 Hey Sal (SCORE) you really put on a show !! The baja 1000 was my first race for team Modica's out of Long Beach ,Ca and (I thank my friend Darren Skilton for that) . I had the time of my life.from the pre-run ,Mikes sky ranch, to the starting line.! but just my luck lost first gear coming into check point 2. All the way home the only thing i could think of was the first race of 2002 season. IM allready packed and ready to go. thanks

We are the one's that come out in page 19 on the ojos negros part 1 on your web -page . Were in the Land cruiser and the Frontier. Here is a cool story that happened to us while we were there at the Baja We went pre-running after the contingency the day before . We were going slow because we were in two stock vehicles .when out of nowhere the outlaw racing's pre-runner comes out in front of us and almost crash head on . We didn't see anything not even aloud of dust until he was about 10 feet away from us .That was scary . Then we turned around and we went back towards the highway . we were going fast after that we jumped and had all four tires at least 2 feet in the air we almost broke the stock shocks . it was still light outside when we crossed the highway and the mud pit . so we went up the mountains and tried to get from ojos negros to ensenada trough the mountains . it was nearly impossible the huge rocks we had to cross to get through . we made it to" valle de Guadeloupe "i think it was it took us about four and a half hours to get there. on the way we ran into 8 racers who were still out pre-running in ojos at about 7or8 they all had the big off road lights . one of them almost rolled of the side of the cliff trying to get around us the road there is extremely narrow and dangerous . it was fun I have most of it on tape along with the race. Oh yeah I really like the web-site it is cool . I am also a subscriber to the magazine , its under Patricia frutos my mom. Hint: We don't have a magazine, yet! Question: Pat, do you have the money to front for a mag that a guy can sit on the can and enjoy? |
