 KLX 300 Modifications

12/30/02

I live just outside of Toronto, Canada, and recently purchased a 2002 KLX 300R in Sept. 02. I have only had a chance to ride the bike a few times before the snow, and I see what you mean by the hesitation in throttle response. I'm an intermediate level, and even when the bike is ridden a little aggressively, the suspension is just way too soft to take it. I like the idea of the carb mod. you suggest, and have read good things about it in other articles but I'm not sure if I want to spend that much money on the bike (because of the Canadian dollar). I want to ride it for a season and then decide if I'm going to keep it or try something else (like the WR250F or WR450F). First, how does the restrictor come out of the exhaust once the three allen bolts are removed? Next, what inexpensive mod. do you suggest for the suspesion, i.e. compression settings, heavier oil in front forks, more oil in forks? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark Garrod

Hi Mark,

Since we did that article the suspension has been done by race tech. Bob the owner of that bike loves it now! Although, there was a bunch of money put into the bike. I'm not really impressed with it unless you are too short (like Bob) I'd just ride it until you get a better bike. We are waiting on the WR450, so look for some info about it soon on ORC. The WR250 is hard to start but I think they are putting an electric start on it so that should clear up that issue.

Good luck,
Mike Hobbs

Dynojet makes kits for these carbs. They are available through K&N. They include needles with several grooves, multiple jets , clips and instructions. Dynojet.com and knfilters.com both have applications charts.

Have fun - George Dorf

 How to Read Spark Plugs

12/28/03

Great article it has helped me a lot and got my bike running again.

 Where to Ride?

I am looking for places to ride dirt bikes in western co. and eastern Utah, also am looking for passenger foot pegs for my yz 426 any ideas ?

thanks Brad

Brad - Check with any of the cycle shops in Grand Junction or Montrose Colorado for the local riding. Approximately 30 miles west of Grand Junction there is an area called Rabbit Valley with lots of trail riding. Also Moab Utah.

For more details - see my personal pages at: http://www.off-road.com/~spodeboy/ under Riding.

Can't help you on the riding areas but take a look at Baja Designs for the foot pegs.

 The Fall Color Tour

12/20/02

Terrific article. It's almost like being there.

12/27/02

Hi, Ths article was well written and very descriptive. I felt like I was there. I just returned from a trip through the Virgin River canyon area on my way to MI to visit my son. I have made a number of CA to PA cross country trips but this was the first time on this route.

The whole time I was driving through Utah and Colorado I was looking for signs of dirt bike trails. I am looking forward to exploring this area in the future. Your article has just peaked my interest even more.

Thx, Clif

I did day one of this ride with you, although I started a little later in the morning. It was my first DS ride and I had a great time. It was great to re-live the ride as I read your accounting of the experience. Those were really great shakes!

Great Job! David Weeks

Sir, Ma'am,

Another excellent article about everyday riding buddies getting together. This is the kind of riding us older ( 44?) guys who are getting back into dirtbikes are doing. We are finally finding the time and money (your advertisers will like that part) to spend on our passion. Thanks for taking care of us with these types of articles.

Thanks for the article. I enjoyed the ride from your viewpoint. You may remember me saying I went to St. George five times to try to find trails to substitute for the "administrative review" areas. Unfortunately, I , too, was disappointed in the result. Ran out of money and time. Hope to see you in Laughlid next spring for more good times and some fun riding.

 Aloha from Hawai'i !

12/08/02

Aloha! I live on the Island of Oahu, Hawai'i , being a local here, I had also lived in Arizona and Cal for a few years , while living there I had the privilege to ride in the wide open AZ desert and Northern Cal trails which was totally awesome and a big change of scenery , I for one would encourage for every trail rider here to go and visit and ride there, to experience the different environment, beauty and never ending trails the mainland has to offer ! While living there in the mainland, I realize not many trailriders had ever rode in the Hawaiian islands or if the sport ever exist here. Here in Hawai'i, most of the trails here are in the jungle with lots of various rugged terrain, speed is usually kept to a minimum (10/25mph) which can go on for miles passing Hawiian historic sites and legends to tell. There are trail races here, what we call HARE n HOUNDS which usually don't consist of time keeping, Their used to be a famous race called the Mauna Kea 200 which was held on the Big island but has been canceled because of land closures and high insurance policy, the major events here now are Labor Day races on the Island of Kaua'i which consist of Hare n hound on Sat, MX on Sun and Trials competition on Mon, for the Island of Oahu there's the famous Turkey trot run which is left for more of the experience, usually only a hand full would finish (20/100) that would last for 6/8 hrs+ depending on your condition, this year(2002) was vicious,,, So if any of you fellow Trailriders are head'en this way for an event or a Vacational trail ride don't hesitate , WE INVITE YOU to experience the other beauty on the other side of the world which I had also had the opportunity to ride and enjoyed my ride there too. Bikes recommended, are smaller displacement , Usually 250/ 125cc enduro stlye power, 2 stroke PREFERRED, because of thier lightness ,easier handling and starting , big 4strokes will wear you out, TRUST ME on this you'll be happy you did . Must have trail riding exprience of an Intermediate or "A" class . Contac me for more info, And my friends and I would glady show you the trails . My email: bullybubu808@aol.com , Aloha and Mahalo (Thank you) for having me on this cool site.

Hi Billy,

I rode in Hawaii for 7 years. In fact, I started Off-Road.com when I lived
in Hawaii.

I know Matt Lyman and Alan Pflueger among many others.

As I am told, the biggest issue with the MK200 was simply the dwindling
numbers of the folks that could participate in creating and staffing the
event. Too much work for too small a group of people.

Take care

What You Need To Be Legal!

12/12/02

Thanks for your helpful tips. I am going to San Bernardino in a couple of weeks during Christmas to stay with relatives. I am from Utah and want to take my 1980 Honda XR500 off road bike with me and ride around various local washes and throughout the Cajon Pass area. My bike is not street legal or registered as it does not have to be Utah. I was concerned when I learned about all the CA restrictions and uptight forest service cops you mentioned on your site. Then the last paragraph stated that if you are from out of state (with proof) these restrictions don't apply. Is this true and could you advise me on some great places around San Berdo to go.

Thanks

Go north on I-15 north of I-10 until you get to the Hwy 138 exit. As you come off the freeway cross the road onto the dirt road and take it back until you come to the second RXR overpass. Stage there and ride up the hill on the fire road to get to some fun trails.

Or... (harder to find) As you come off 138 turn right and follow it up and around Lake Silverwood. As you go around the lake will be on your left look for a small sign that says Miller Canyon/Lake Silverwood back entrance or something like that. After making the left a quick right will put you at the staging area. If I were you I'd get a map of the area at the ranger station (on the right side when the lake is on your left) or you might get lost up there.

Or... Go to www.mxoffroad.com and get on Ride-Net. Maybe someone will meet you up there and show you the area.

 Fall Frolic in Frazier Park

Nice writeup Ron. Wish I would have made this one so I could be famous too!

A few months ago at PigFestWest1 we were about to ride what I believe is calld Lower Piru Creek Trail. This trail I haven't riden since the 80's and don't really have a recollection of it but some have told me they think its harder than Snowy...As we were approaching the trail head 2 Japenese guys came off it and said their buddy fell off the cliff at the step up rock section and they needed the ranger for a rescue. We rode up Alamo and I used my cell to call for help. We decidied to pass since we had riden Snowy the day b4 and thought this to be a bad Omen. Now 2 months later anothr friend of mine who I went to CalCity with over Thanks said he was just out there on Piru and they have dynamited both the rocky section and the part where the steel bridge is. Subsequently removing the 2 most difficult parts of the trail. My friend said the bridge is still there but you don't use it anymore...

Perhaps they just got tired of rescuing and treating the crash and burners. Thats All !!! Just thought I would report the latest.

The ride you folks went on looked like lots of fun. I have a DRZ400k (red sticker) and would like to go on the 60 mile loop with a friend who has a WR426 (red sticker). I was unable to print the map into one page. The map printed on 3 pages and I couldn't get the 3 pages to spell out the trail. Any hints on this? When is the next ride so we can join and meet new riding friends?

e:mail - martin.liska@sf.frb.org I am also on the Ridenet List

Thanks

Sorry you couldn't print the map - Printing through a browser is pretty tricky. Try saving the image and printing it with an imaging program - forced to one page. If that doesn't work for you - send us a message at dirtbike@off-road.com and we'll see what we can do.
