CRUSTY OLD SET-UPS

While going through my old photo files recently, I ran across a bazillion neat tech and how-to photos. So, rather than do any new work, I compiled some of the little tips and tricks that used to work way back then. If you have a vintage dirt bike, much of this will be helpful. If not, it'll at least bring back a few memories.

Enjoy!

On just about any CZ ever made, the throttle cable fit loosley in the housing, and could jump out if the slide hung up a bit. Wrapping some tape around the cable, while not pretty, does the trick. Many other bikes have this same potential problem. No matter what year your vintage bike is, your trans will live longer if you install a magnetic drain plug. The particles that scruff off the gears will collect on the tip, rather than float around inside and damage bearings.

Install a rubber booty over your carb top. The best ones are from the round-slide Mikunis. A used one will cost you a buck at a bone yard, and it'll do a good job of keeping water and grit out of your carb.Tired of bleeding thumbs? Cut a foam donut and slip it over the grips on each side.

Older bikes with remote shock reservoirs are typically held in place with hose clamps. Always install the clamps at the ends of the reservoir, rather than anywhere near the center. Why? Because when the reservoir gets hot and expands, the clamps will tighten up on the floating piston separator, causing it to stick. Most any older Maico will benefit from wise use of duct tape in the air box if you're riding in wet conditions.
