Don't Ask: You Have Been Warned

Readers' Questions Answered by Super Hunky

DIRE WARNINGS AND THINGS YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

If you choose to email a question to this forum, then you must conduct yourself accordingly. Therefore, the following rules are in order:

1. Do not write your email to me IN CAPS. If youdo so, I will print out your question and do terrible things to it.

2. Do not request a personal email response.Since I get thousands of questions each month, trying to answer them all would cut deeply into my leisure time, which I value more than your current state of confusion.

3. Try to spell at least in a semi-correct fashion. If you choose to mangle the English language, expect no mercy from this quarter. You might be mocked severely.

4. Do not ask for me to send you copies of my many manuals and literature. I am not in the library business, nor do I want to spend the bulk of my day at the copy machine just because you're too lazy to ask your dealer, or look around a bit.

5. Don't bother me with truly stupid questions, like how to get 50 more horsepower for a buck and a half

6. Now that you know the rules, think carefully and have at it!

Oh yes Ill leave your email unedited, for what its worth.

SUBJECT:CONFUSION AND NO SPARK IN A 93 XR600

I HAVE A 1993 XR600R,I HAVE NO SPARK.REPLACED COIL, PLUG, STATOR. CHECKED ALL WIRING AND KILL SWITCH NEED HELP PLEASE

SHANE
LAFAYETTE, IN

First off, quit typing your email IN CAPS. It's like yelling in a crowded phone booth. When you have a problem like yours, check the basics. Every connection must be checked for water or corrosion. Places where the wiring is zip-tied to a frame tube should be checked for broken insulation or sections of frayed wire touching metal. Lastly, check the kill switch and the plug wire itself. Let me know what you find.

SUBJECT:BABBLING AND A 2001 RM 125

hi . i have a 2001 rm 125 just wondering if you can diagnose the problem with it.. it kicks up fine but thers a horrible noise coming from the gear box even when its in neutral it sounds like theres a load of nuts and bolts in there rattling around it selects gears ok when you run through them when its turned off but if you put it in gear while its running it cuts out well it does in neutral aswell unless you have it on a bike stand with the wheel off the floor.. when its turned off and you pick the back end up and spin the back wheel you can hear the noise it sounds like its comintg from behind the front sprocket thats why im geusing its the gear box as i've heard rms have problems with them..

just wondering 1, what you think it is.. 2, is it hard to fix and 3 if it is will it cost a lot to get repaired.. hope you can help me thanks for your time...

Full Throttle
Derby, ENGLAND

Your email goes perfectly with your goofy signature of "Full Throttle" and your rambling nearly incoherent message with no punctuation or caps. It should obvious to anyone smarter than a houseplant that you must remove the case cover and have a look. As for what it would cost to repair a gearbox, might I suggest a call to your local Suzuki dealer?

what sort of hose do you need to vent the crankcase ? whats wrong with the factory hose? i have 03 klx 300r and yes it lacks performance big time whats the best mods cheers

Just use an ordinary section of fuel line. As far as I'm concerned, the entire KLX line are poor bikes. I had a friend with a KLX like yours and he had over $2000 worth of trick stuff on it and my stock KDX 200 would easily pull it through the gears.

SUBJECT:90 YZ 250 FOULING PLUGS

Hi Rick,

My 1990 yz 250 is fouling plugs in about an hour of riding. I cleaned the carb many times and it has good comprosion and runs really good till the plug fouls. I am running 32:1 with klots oil and premium gas. What do you think i should do to fix it.

Thanks, Bryan
Leeper, PA

Nice spelling on "comprosion" Bryan. Chances are you are simply jetted too rich and fouling plugs from that.

SUBJECT:A CONFUSING YAMAHA MINI

I have a 1972 Yamaha 80. I can't seem to find out exactly which model they refer to it as. I was told to look at the engine serial numbers which are 393 012869 I would like to change the points in it. I've tried to find a manual on it but don't know if it's a lt2 or or what? Any help on this would be appreciated!

Thanks
Jim
Portland, OR

The 1971 JT1MX was a mild 60cc rotary valve little beastie with a four speed box, autolube, primary start, and approved USFS spark arrestor. To keep costs down, Yamaha cut corners on the suspension, and designed the front forks with one spring in the right fork leg, using compression dampening, with no spring on the left side, with rebound dampening. The rear shocks used rebound damping, which was just fine for a beginner.

1972 JT2 MX 60

The JT1MX was replaced with the 80cc version, with better suspension, a reed valve and 20cc more displacement. And it gained about 30 pounds in the process.

They never made an 80 in 1972. The 80cc version came out in 1973 and was called the GT80MX. 80cc with reed valve & about 40 more lbs. A real pig. The 60 was a lot faster.

Here are a few photos to help you. By the way, your model info is on the steering head.

SUBJECT:90 KDX200 REBUILD

hi bud, gotta say like your sense of humor. anyways i got a 1990 kdx 200, its my first bike and i love her. last season i blew the engine. i know for sure i need new bearings, connecting rod, pin, maybe shaft. i know u like the kdx's but you think shes worth to rebuild the whole engine and if so you got any idea how much, thx

Trent
Alberta, CANADA

A clean solid KDX 200 of that year is worth $850 or so. If you can get the rebuild done for under $500, go for it. If not, part the bike out on ebay. Contact your local dealer for an estimate on the rebuild.

SUBJECT:YAMAHA IT/RT TOP END SWAPS

I was wondering if you could put a top end off of a 1979 Yamaha IT 175 on a 1991 RT 180 bottom end? I was just woundering this because I have a 79 IT and the cases are shot. I picked up a 79 DT 175 bottom end for the cases and found out the IT Cylinder fits right on but the ports are way bigger then the DTs, so it wont work. I know where there is a 91 RT 180 for cheap.

SUBJECT:BIKE RUNNING BACKWARD

I havejust been reading another rag (motorcycle magazine). It of course doesnt begin to comparewith the content and quality ofTrail Rider Magazine but sometimes yourun out of reading material and anything will do.Often of interest to me is the Letters to the Editor, specially the short ones that get right to the point. This one letter caught my eye and started me thinking (unusual for me, but on occasion?).It ask the question of whether or not the editor had ever heard of a two-stroke running backward.

As of right now I still dontknow the reply because as usual my mind immediately begin drifting back in time (another frequent occurrence). Somewhere back in theearly to mid 1970s (that is my way of telling you I have a poor memory) I was a Penton dealer soon tobecome KTM. in any case I had a new Penton 250 that I was using for MX and Hare Scrambles, the Hare Scrambles being myfavorite by far as it did away with the jitters

I always got thinking about the first turn in an MX andall the potential situations, few of which in my mindhad positive outcomes.

I believe the location of this particular HS wasin Marysville California possibly under the old E St. bridge.(When you see this memory thing pop-up the best thing isto just let your mind plug in a date and location that suits you!) Soon to the storyon thisday as was standard procedure you propped you bike up with a stick after digging asmall ditch under the rear wheel. You see the starts were always dead engine and of course the bike needed to be started in neutral which necessitated the ditch so that the bike wouldnt roll of the stick and knock down all the other machines.

Okay now on to the start. It was common practice to face your bike from about 20 feet (that always changed) and on the GO command run to your machine start it, slam it into second gear (at least on the Penton), nail the throttle and drop the clutch. All of this I did at my usual pace, which on this occasion had me getting to the bike, having it start on the first kick, drop easily into gear, turn the throttle to the stops and drop the hammer! If there hadnt been so much noise around me, as you see the two-strokes back then were unmuffled and ear plugs were for ditch digging and jack-hammer operators, in any case withoutall the racket I might have noticed that the motor sounded a bit off and sluggish to take the throttle in a much unusual way (unless youve heard it, well?) sowhen I dropped the clutch I was immediately slammedinto the handlebars, my feet went flying forward and I was propelled backward in a human U shape form at a high rate of speed. This event brought out several different reactions from spectators and friends, non-riders and women who screamed and ran while hoping I would survive this un-natural act of reverse propulsion. The riders that had already raced or were about to were to a person either doubled over or actually on the ground dealing with fits of laughter and blow back thru the nose. Many of them later on stated they thought they themselvesmightpassoutbecause theyunable to breathe for a moment or two.

So I just know you are anxiously awaiting the outcome of this incredible launch, and further what damage might have been done to thebike or myself. Well now I have to inform you that much like a favorite race on TV where you didnt set the recorder to go long enough, I apologize (to those that have read this far) that I have no recollection at leastof the initial outcome. I do have a faint memory of restarting the Penton and taking off after the rest of the riders. I sort of recall being sore in spots Id never felt discomfort in previously. And further more I dont recall this phenomenon happening to me everagain.

Things like thisas we all know only happen when there is a crowd around, and always filled with friends and people you know, who unlike myself will never forget this as long as they live.

Oh, and one last thing I faintly recall is that after the race was over and I returned to the pits no one came over to talk to me except for a few riders that had been on the line and been fortunate enough to propel themselves forward therefore having no knowledge of the Really Big Show. Others pointed toward me from areas they thought out of range, and many flew back into fits of laughter.

Glad I could make your day!

Al Banta

Your saga definitely made my day.

SUBJECT:HONDA CRF230 STARTER DOESNT WORK

My Honda crf230f has electric start. It now malfunctions. It just makes a whirring noise. I am a new owner and somewhat mechanically inclined. Do you think that I can fix this or should i take it to someone who works on these bikes?? Do thes break often? I purchased this bike used.

Trevor

Actually, the electric start is very reliable on the Honda 230. It's entirely possible that your battery is too low to spin the starter. However, I would take the starter off and inspect the end for a broken or loose sprag.

SUBJECT:HARD STARTING 08 HONDA CRX 450

I have an 08 Honda CRX 450 which I've ridden only a handful of times. I bought it practically brand new from a dealership. My problem with the bike is that it will only start when I have the reserve tank on and when I switch it over to the main tank, the bike will run for about five minutes and then the engine dies out. When I have the choke out and am trying to let the bike warm up it will also eventually shut off with the main tank on. I've replaced all the fluids I can think of and am wondering what is going on with the bike? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Fisher
Los Gatos, CA

Quite a simple problem, really. Your first clue is that you have to turn to the reserve to get the bike running. You have a fuel starvation problem. First, remove the fuel petcock and clean the crud out of it. While you're at it, take the carb out and clean it thoroughly, including the float needle and seat.

SUBJECT:CARB BOOT REPLACEMENT TIPS

Just caught up on your last few months of postings. Can always depend on a few laughs and some useful info. Heres a tip that may be useful in resorting old bikes. A common problem is shrunk or damaged aircleaner / carby boots. I sucessfully replaced on on an old PE as follows. You can use a suitably modified rubber boot from the CV jiont of a front drive car. These seem to be fuel resistant, flexible and come in a whole range of sizes. Most taper from large at one end to smaller at the other, which works fine. Take the old one (or the opening diameter measurements) to an autoparts shop. You should be able to find one with the same diameter at the larger (air cleaner) end, that tapers to the same or smaller than the carby end.

If the carbt end is way too small, cut it back up the taper, but leave it tight enough to streach over the carby intake, to help make a better seal. There does not seem to be any problem with it collapsing under full throttle. If this is a problem with the particulat boot you need to use, you can easily make ap un internal cage to hold its shape. Heres a good YZ 490 story to add to the list. When they first came out 81?, a local bike shop showed up at a Saturday grass track event with one, where it cleaned up.

On Monday I happened to be at the dealers, and noticed the engine out of the 490 mounted in a bench dyno. Now this dealer was the man to beat on the local road race curcuit, partly because he always had his TZ250 jetted and tuned to perfection. When I asked him what was happening with the 490 engine he replied "nothing serious, I'm just trying to get the #@&^%(@^& thing to run cleanly. He sold it soon afterward. ,have fun.

Great tips, Dave. We'll pass them on to the ORC readers and a big thank you.

SUBJECT:HOT RUNNING 2005 YX 85

I have a question about a 2005 YZ 85... The bike seems to run great before the engine gets pretty hot..such as the first couple of laps and then when it is been running long enough through a moto it seems as though it will not run at all. Have been through the entire carb and found nothing. Was thinking that it could be something electrical but not too sure. Can you help with these details or would you need to know more? Thanks for the help....

It's entirely possible that you're running too lean. Yank the plug after the bike gets hot. If it's white or gray in color, there's your answer.

SUBJECT: PROTECTING HONDA CRF150 FORK TUBES

Hey Rick,

I own a honda CRF150F, and the front shock covers ripped (i'm not to sure what to call them). Is it important to replace them. I do off road riding and sometimes go on deeper mud than i mean to, and when that happens i should have shock cover so mud doesnt get in them right?.. anyways srry for bothering you becausei know it would be a no brainer question for you. iwould apreciate it if you would reply, thanks.

By shock covers, I assume you mean fork guards. The prime reason these things exist is to keep rocks and debris from nicking or scratching the exposed fork tubes.

SUBJECT:MONTESA 348 COTA QUESTIONS

Rick, Hello.

I have a few questions please, pertaining my Montesa Cota 348 that I have recently aquired....... I'm in the process of restoring this bike to it's former functional status, not to show-room condition, but replacing items such as cables, fenders, engine seals, fork seals, new .050mm overbore piston, wheel bearings, wheel truing, etc....

About the exhaust system.....I'm wondering if I need to replace the glass packing in the muffler? I have cleaned it out with first Lye / water to remove the built-up oil and coke, and then I used a propane torch to burn out any remaining residue in the muffler. Much oily smoke was made...... The muffler seems to flow without constriction, do I need to or should I cut open the muffler and replace the glass? Would be quite a job requiring rewelding the flap back on..... What would the benifits be?

Secondly, I have a Keihin PWK 29s [28mm ] carb to replace the old Amal MK II with. It'll be almost a direct fit to install. Wondering......what would the appropriate main and slow jets be for my application? Any help / info would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks.

Spokerider
BC, CANADA

We turned to Keith Lynas for this one. Not only is he the owner of OSSA Planet (www.ossaplanet.com), he also knows more about Spanish bikes that anyone should now. Here are his thoughts:

Sure, I would run it with and without the muffler (with the Amal)first and see if there is a huge difference, if so then cut it and fix it, they can restrict when not properly cleaned/packed....as for the carb, the Keihin will work, but will not provide the proper low speed pulling power like the Amal because of the venturi design.....I would begin jetting with a 38 or 40 pilot, and main jet somewhere around a160-172 should be close. Good luck,

Keith

SUBJECT:94 YZ125 CRANK SEAL PROBLEM

I just bought a '94 YZ125 that ran a couple times for 5 minutes each, then stops. Felt like fuel starvation. carb had debris in it. Cleaned carb countless times now - it is right. Now I kick like crazy with the stator cover off (checking electric) and see gas leaking out the bottom of the stator cover area. Besides the obvious left crank seal, HOW can gas get in the case to leak there? Do I need to rebuild 100% of it, or fix something in particular? Reed valve, ideas? Thanks for your help.

Rick
Ozarks, MO

We turned to our resident Yamaha expert, Matt Cuddy for the answer to this one. Here are his thoughts on the subject:

Bad crank seal on the timing side. Blown out, not a shred left. Also his carb is all goofed up, float needle is most likely too high (rich). That's why it's pouring out the timing side case.

SUBJECT:LAWNMOWER TECH QUESTION FOR MATT CUDDY

Hey, Rick.

I have a technical question that you may be able to help me with. I am at work, now (have sun/mon off) and I work on small engines. I used to do heavy equipment repair at John Deere Industrial shops, even worked for Billy Payne for a while until he wanted me to go from 6 days a week to 7! Nope, gotta go to the DEZ! Off the subject, here...This is not a dirt bike question, but your indefinate wisdom may help. If you don't want to answer a lawn mower question, just tell me to go away.

I got a customers Lawn Boy 2 stroke mower. It runs great, but blows fuel mix out exhaust. 120 compression. Plug not real black, dark tannish. Removed entire exhaust to check for carbon. None (fuel probably acts as solvent to keep exhaust clean). I thought I was pretty smart on this stuff after 36 years of knuckle-bustin' but I am stumped.Joe (who is actually the one working on it) left the customers fuel in it. Who knows what the mix is.

Also, while exhaust was off, looked at piston/cyl. Cyl still has cross hatching, but slight scoring appx 1/4 inch wide. I know you may think 120 is low on comp, but that's about all these small engines get. WhenI say "blows fuel" I don't mean gushing out, more like a heavy seepage. Well, that's about it for now. Hope to hear from you right quick. Your dirt bike kinda guy/friend.

Dave Fruhling

Once again, when we have a question about weird engines, we turn to our weird engine specialist, Matt Cuddy. Here's his short and probably accurate answer:

Bad carb, diaphragm has a tear in it (pulse-jet carb). If it's not a pulse-jet, the carb has a float needle problem.

SUBJECT:76 KAWASAKI KD100 PISTON CLEARANCE

Hello good Sir!

Heres the deal. i was given a 1976 Kawasaki KD 100, which is really the same thing as the KM 100's from then, and in spite of gods will, I got it running again. Having a ball for about two weeks when it occurred to me that the reason it wouldn't start all of the sudden was the missing compression rings. im certainly going to have to bore the cylinder over, but my question is what piston to cylinder clearance am i looking for? i was able to get .032 to .042 mil from a KE 100 manual, but those bikes are alot newer and those dimensions seem ridiculously tight to me. any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! thanks again!

Brian Foose
Boalsburg, PA

First off, you really ought to get a manual. Secondly, the specs on piston clearance seem about right. It wouldn't hurt to do the top end on the "loose" side of things.

Here's some info:

TYRAN 125 MX

Racers from the early '70s might recognize this bike, but only if you were one of the hard-core guys. Not too many of the Tyran bikes made it to the track, as they cost around a grand, when all the great Japanese bikes were in the $700 range. They were also faster, shifted better, and were more reliable. It's no small wonder then that the Tryan is no longer with us. Below are the specs:

Hmmm. Do you want to race your bike, or just beat your buddies in a drag race? If you want to race, then get a good pipe and have a shop do a porting job on your cylinder. Cost? Figure about $150 for the pipe and the same for the porting. But be aware that the bike will be much harder to ride.

SUBJECT:YAMAHA TTR230 AIR LEAKS?

Rick,

In regards to your comments about rejetting with a 130 main my ttr230 is also breaking up at high RPM's in every gear. Low and mid throttle is fine. I have shimmed the needle, turned out the air/fuel screw 2 full turns, adjusted the float but the problem remains. If I have an air leak causing the problem what areas could the leak originate from? Thanks for all your information.

Richard
Newport Beach, CA

Make sure that you did all the mods we listed in Part 3 of our Project Bike series. Not only did we use a 130 main, but we used a 38 pilot and drilled out the brass plug as well. Look for air leaks anywhere in the carb and where the carb is mounted. Also check for blown or leaking head or base gaskets.

SUBJECT:GEARING CHANGES ON A YAMAHA TTR 230

By putting the 15 tooth c/s sprocket will the bike have more power.

John
Remigny, CANADA

The idea behind the larger countershaft sprocket is to make the power in the Yamaha TTR 230 more usable. Stock, you could almost walk alongside the bike in first gear. With the larger sprocket, you now have a more usable gear box, and a greater top speed as well. No gearing will alter the actual power of any bike.
