Colorado Springs Colorado, Home of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb, was the site of round ten of the AHRMA Speed and Sport Sponsored National MX Series. AHRMA National MX returned to Aztec Family Raceway this year and was rewarded with another fine vintage style racetrack. The wide-open spaces and somewhat sandy surface of Aztec raceway lends itself to a track that lets vintage bikes rip and roost. Brad Lackey must have agreed as he roosted to yet another +40 double moto win.

Colorado is usually dry in the summer with no significant rain other than the occasional thundershower that produces lots of lightening and thunder but only brief rain. Again this year the track was pelted by rain, but on Thursday before the event. This natural watering made the track just great for the start of practice on Sunday. The track was long, wide, and fast, with characteristically great traction. The course featured an up-hill straight that had riders surprised at the momentum they could carry into an up-then-down hill, on camber, off camber, sweeping 90 degree bend. The course also gave the rider room to run and jump, with long vintage-friendly peaks on the high-speed main straight. I can tell you that Brad Lackey and the other front runners and hard chargers were airing-out over these jumps. The track prep by the Aztec crew, lead by track owner Byron Wolff, was excellent. Byron fired up the tractor and water truck sprucing up before the second set of motos and applied more water later in the program. All events should be this lucky.

+ 40 Expert proved to be a good battle between two Colorado riders and one Arizonan, all chasing after Brad Lackey. The start of the first moto saw Brad jump out to the lead followed by the 440 Maico Van Hice and Alfredo Rodil’s CZ. Moving up into fourth was Dave Lindeman after bogging off the line on his 250 Penton. Lindeman moved up past both AMS’s "Fredo" Rodil and Colorado’s Hice into second by the finish. Moto two saw Hice get the lead into the first turn and continue for most of the first lap, until passed by Lackey with an outside move in a sweeping corner. Dave Lindeman again overcame the power deficient between his 250 Penton passing the open bike of Rodil and then Hice, to finish only a short way behind Lackey. The 1983 World 500 Motocross Champion Lackey said of the tall and near 260 lbs. Hice "That Big Guy on the Maico went good off the start, and never stood up either."

Premier 500 Expert was again a race between the B40 BSA of Claude McElvain, and BSA Gold Star of Jeff Smith. In the first moto McElvain lead from the start with Smith just behind. Then, on the last lap, Smith pressed hard and took the lead near the end for the flag. Moto two saw McElvain again lead but this time Smith took over on the first lap not to be headed all the way to the finish with McElvain in close pursuit. When asked about racing with the former World Motocross Champion from 64 & 65, McElvain said "Sometimes I think he plays with me like a little mouse." Corky Root, also on a BSA B40, finished third.

Dave Boydstun prevailed once again in Classic 500 expert with Dan Johns finishing second. Dave Lindeman completely trounced the +30 and Sportsman 250 Expert classes with wire to wire double moto wins. Second in + 30 Expert went to Mark Simpson on a Yamaha. Second Sportsman 250 Expert went to Mark Mace. Kevin Forrester, on Honda, finished third in +30 and Sportsman 250 Expert.

Dan Beher, 250 Ducati, checked out in both motos for an easy win in Premier Lightweight Intermediate. The next three places were up for grabs in hard fought contest for second. In the end, second overall Dan Vitaletti (Cotton) prevailed over Tony Asnicar’s Greeves and the BSA of Chris Makynen.

After washing out four of Saturdays Trials Sections, due to the Thursday rainstorm, only eight Sections were left. Event day weather started out overcast and quickly cleared to very warm and sunny.

Trials Master Mike Rentfrow laid the sections out again his year. The toughest section was the combined section 7/8. This combined section featured a series on short, steep, climbs and drops, followed by tight turns - very challenging. I couldn't find anyone that thought it should have been made harder. The drops on the 1 line at the end of Section 8 were steep and let you down with a big 'plop', with way too much speed to make the tight turns that followed.

Section three included a Teeter-totter on the 1 line and barrels "of fun" for everyone to cross. This whimsical little section kept people on their 'toes' while they slipped around on those barrels.

In Modern Classic, the Expert line mastered by Mike Rentfrow. First Intermediate was won by Dave Boydstun, after he observed at Section 5 for most of the event. Premier Lightweight Intermediate was a close battle between Colorado rider Dan Vittaletti and Tony Asnicar with the 1963 Greeves TFS of Vitaletti beating out the Greeves Anglican of Asnicar. Colorado's Dick Headwall took first in Rigid (no rear suspension!) framed Intermediate on his 46 BSA B34.
