Custom Numbers with Attitude

Go to the starting line of any local race and take a look around at the numbers used on the bikes. You'll quickly realize that the majority of the Bikes and ATVs are using pre-numbered backgrounds. Typically these backgrounds are less than $50, look pretty nice and are not that much more expensive than buying a set of backgrounds and numbers and assembling the mess yourself. In addition to the convenience, pre-printed backgrounds are getting more and more fancy with the inclusion of team names, graphics, stripes and other cool features.

 Pre Printed Numbers

Well, this year I decided I was going to use the pre-printed numbers instead of messing up the numbers myself. However, in my never-ending quest to find the most value for my stretched dollar I did a bit of shopping. I wasn't interested in the high end backgrounds; I just needed the basic package to support my needs. With a bit of searching I found that Attack Graphics (www.attackgraphics.com) had a three piece package for about $30 plus shipping, that will fit most motorcycles and ATVs.

On paper they had all of the features of the other guys like layered printing, pre-cut backgrounds, and 14 mil decals. It was super-easy to order the numbers by phone. I just gave them the numbers, colors, fonts, up to 10 additional letters on the font number plate, and my desire for a stripe around the numbers (which is included for free if you want white). They had a number of options as well like different color stripes and more text on the numbers.

As I said before, I was opting for the basic package (I was more concerned about function than getting something pretty for my non-existent sponsors to approve of?). During the ordering process I had one minor disappointment since I use a number plate on my DRZ instead of the original headlight. The backgrounds only come packaged by bike, so it was not possible for me to use the DRZ side plates and a RM number plate unless I bought two separate sets. For most guys this won't be an issue, but for me I had to go back to the headlight to use the pre-printed background.

The package arrived in the mail just a day or two later, and I was really surprised by the quick turnaround. I was also surprised to see that they had included a mini version of the front number plate sticker for use on your truck or helmet or wherever.

 Application

As far as the application goes, I'll start out by saying that I had quite a bit of trouble

getting these backgrounds on the plastic. I tried all of the techniques: heat, soapy water, stretching and anything else I could think of but I'd say my overall results we still mediocre. The stickers actually went on pretty well on the headlight and the left side panel, but that awful right side panel was terrible.

All of the new fourstrokes have a seriously bulged right side panel to accommodate the large exhausts. This wasn't as much of an issue in the past when you could take a blank background and just stretch it around and make it fit. If you had a wrinkle or had to put a small slice in the decal to make everything fit it was no big deal. However, when
everything is printed on the decal the opportunity for error is seriously magnified. This was a frustrating process for me, especially considering I'm a patient guy. I'm not sure if the quality of the decal contributed to my struggles since this is the only pre-printed set I've applied, but I would warn anyone with pre-printed backgrounds and a four-stroke to be prepared for some challenges. My racing buddy with the KTM 250 EXC had no problems getting his decals on perfectly straight, however, so it could completely be user error.

Ultimately I was able to get that decal on the right side panel and it looked fair, but it was certainly no pro job. The next set would turn out better because of my added experience.

 Last Corner

For the money that I spent I felt like these pre-printed backgrounds were a good value. I don't know if they are worse than the more expensive options, but they were adequate for me, and I think the issues with application was more operator error than issues with the quality of the product. I've had these on the bike for a few months now and after a number of rides/races and get-offs they still look great with no indication of peeling or even heavy scratches.

If you have a patient hand and are eager to try pre-printed backgrounds, I think that for $30 from Attack Graphics you now have no excuses. Give them a try.
