PEE WEES TO PROS/MOTOCROSS, FAMILY AND FRIENDSTIRED OF CRUSTY TAPES?

First impressions can be misleading. When I received this video, I took a quick glance at the title - PeeWees to Pros/Motocross, Family and Friends - and figured I was in for a bland 45 minutes of viewing. It appeared to be a cross between The Partridge Family and On Any Sunday, or at least a lame attempt at this.

The opening segment didn?t do anything to allay these fears. It consists of nice, clean simple racing footage of amateurs, backed by utterly ordinary music. The temptation was there to simply fast-forward through the tape, type up a blistering review and let the tape sink into oblivion, where it deserved to reside.

However, editorial integrity, combined with the fact that there was nothing else good on the tube at the time, forced me to watch more.

Which, in retrospect, was a good thing.

The footage improved, and it was pleasant to watch regular folks out on a track, having fun, making mistakes, dealing with awkward jumps, riding off corners, indulging in beginners blunders and acting more or less like most of us do when we strap a helmet on and go racing with our friends and family.

Then, right before the halfway point of the video, there was a segment about Dave Jackson, a one-armed rider, that was worth more than the price of the tape. The footage of Dave piloting his YZ around a very rough course, using only one hand, was genuinely inspiring!

And the music, which up to this point was forgettable, was a pure winner! Even the lyrics were brilliant. I paused after the Dave Jackson segment, rewound, and watched it again. It is absolutely fantastic! So much so, that if you get the tape, you?ll want to show it to a friend.

The video next featured a well-done segment on a privateer pro (Bruce Stratton) riding on his practice track, again with excellent music backing up the riding footage.

However, much like the video started, it ended on a bland note.

Still, all things considered, including the horribly dull title, it?s a tape you can watch with pleasure. And unlike some of the "Crusty Demons" videos, it?s something you can show to kids without worrying about them seeing tattooed freaks and bare asses being the stars.
