Over 70 participants lined up for the 2014 General Tire Vegas to Reno qualifying today, but only one racer would be fastest and earn the pole position while others found themselves at the end of a rope.

Held just outside Las Vegas in Jean, Nevada, the heavy hitters in the unlimited classes would pound out two laps around what was once the site of the Nevada Landing Hotel casino. Top qualifier once again went to the man wearing the #1 plate, last year’s Trick Truck Champion Jason Voss.

Sam Berri

“We started toward the back of the pack in qualifying and saw quite a bit of carnage that took out Bryce [Menzies], Ricky [Johnson] and [Justin] Matney so we decided to just try to be smooth and keep a good momentum,” Voss said. “Starting up front is nice. Hopefully it pays off.”

Following Voss was “the qualifier” Sam Berri, who finished just 3 seconds behind. Jesse Jones looked fast and put a clean lap for the third spot over Justin Lofton in fourth. Pat Dean brought out his trusty old Bunderson to round out the top five.

Ray Griffith was one of the last to qualify but threw down a good time for the 6th qualifying spot. Josh Daniel and his twin-turbo-powered Trick Truck pulled in a solid 7th. Shawn Croll looked good sliding into the 8th position at Jean. Although Dale Dondel actually had the top position initially, a 15-second penalty for hitting a cone pushed him back to the 9th spot. Young gun Justin Davis rounded out the top 10 in his Jimco Trick Truck.

Justin Matney

Some of the stars of the sport ended up having a little bit of trouble at qualifying, including Bryce Menzies, Ricky Johnson and Justin Matney. Starting from the back of the pack will be interesting for these guys but you can’t count them out, they will be on a mission for sure.

Stay tuned for more race action from the 2014 General Tire BITD Vegas to Reno.
