The new era of SCORE off-road racing continued with more new twists in the form of qualifying for Trophy Trucks and Class 1 buggies at the 2013 Baja 500. SCORE President Roger Norman, who took over the reigns of the organization from Sal Fish at the end of last year, implemented a new qualifying format for this year’s 500, something SCORE has never done before south of the border. 

Although SCORE still held its usual drawing for starting spots, Trophy Truck and Class 1 drivers could improve their starting positions by posting the fastest qualifying time on a short course near Ojos Negros, the exact location of which was kept secret to avoid a public spectacle. Drivers who chose not to qualify would start in the order of their draw behind all of the teams who attempted to qualify.

After the times were recorded, Robby Gordon came away with a fast time of 5 minutes, 38.420 seconds to best the qualifying field of 32 Trophy Trucks. Jason Voss came in second with a time of 5:40.283. Bryce Menzies was third with a time of 5:41.79, Juan Lopez was fourth, and BJ Baldwin rounded out the top five in the class (see more results below).

Randy Wilson posted the fastest Class 1 time on the qualifying course, 5:50.103, besting second-placed Corey Keysar by exactly 4 seconds. Eduardo Laguna qualified third with a time of 5:57.622.
