Rob MacCachren, Andy McMillin and Jason Voss earned the win at the 2014 SCORE Baja 1000.

With the results in from SCORE International, it’s official that Rob MacCachren, Andy McMillin and Jason Voss are the 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 Champions. Earning the overall victory and Trophy Truck win, MacCachren and team made it to La Paz relatively trouble-free, completing the race in 22 hours, 32 minutes and 28 seconds (nearly 2 hours faster than the Pro Motorcycle winners).

This is not the first time MacCachren has partnered with McMillin down in Baja, though the team didn’t get the result it wanted then and wanted to try again. MacCachren also relied on McMillin to fill in for him earlier in the SCORE season.

“Andy [McMillin] and I drove last year's Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 together and we really wanted to win that race but some things didn't quite go our way, so I wanted Andy to come back and run with me again this year,” MacCachren said. “Andy and I were going to split it up this year, but when we started hearing about all the devastation down here from the hurricane I woke up early one morning and the light bulb went off that we needed three drivers. I gave Jason [Voss] a call and asked him to give some thought to it. He called me back the next morning and was all in.”

The veteran MacCachren knows that having the drivers is only part of the winning formula, and he credits the hard work of his entire team in prepping the car and helping coordinate the logistics its takes to win the 1275-mile race.

Jason Voss talks with the media after crossing the finish line in La Paz.

“To win the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 on a peninsula run takes a lot of planning and a lot of people,” he said. “We had over 100 people down here supporting us and 60 of them were south of Ensenada on Monday.”

McMillin also credited the team for preparing a great truck for the drivers.

“The guys in the shop prepared an impressive truck that lasted three pretty aggressive drivers for 1,275 miles,” McMillin said.

Voss handled the final leg of the race, and he credited his fellow drivers for giving him a truck that wasn’t trashed from the 900-plus miles it had already traveled.

“When Andy handed the truck over to me at mile 922 it felt like a brand new truck,” Voss said. “Andy handed it to us in the lead and we set a good pace and tried to put some time on the guys behind us. Luckily we never had to look back and we had a smooth day.”

Luke McMillin finished in second place overall and in Trophy Truck.

Finishing second in class and second overall among four-wheeled vehicles was Luke McMilllin and brother Dan.

“Today the difference between first and second was just a little bit of luck that we didn't have,” Luke said. “We had a couple of small issues that weren't anybody's fault. The truck started shutting off because of electrical issues but we don't know what the cause was. It is a mystery, but it happened up by San Javier wash and it was really, really wet. The goal for a peninsula run is to have a clean day and we both did and were reasonably close [to winning] but they had a cleaner day.”

Finishing in third place in Trophy Truck was Cameron Steele, who partnered with Pat Dean to tackle this year’s 1000.

“When I started the race I said if we could get on the podium it would be as good as winning,” Steele said. “We are here on the podium and I have no complaints.”
