Jason Voss Wins 2014 BITD Vegas to Reno

For the second consecutive year, Jason Voss earned the win home for the Best in the Desert General Tire Vegas to Reno race. Battling a racecourse of over 500 miles of silt, rocks and searing desert heat, Voss led the race from the start for flag-to-flag win with no issues.

“First time starting up front so figuring out the pace was the biggest challenge,” Voss said. “I didn't want to over-drive the truck early on. We set a pace we were comfortable with and just stuck with it. If split times showed someone catching us we knew we would have to step it up. Perfect day, no flats, we just kept forward momentum all day.”

After qualifying first, Voss used the clean air out front to his advantage.

“Not sure when the last time someone won from the pole, but we thought we could do it,” Voss said. “No dust is a huge advantage. We still can't believe we won back to back.”

Dale Dondel broke his streak of DNFs for second overall at this year’s race. Dondel had often qualified well but new truck gremlins often took him out of the running. Third overall and in Trick Truck was awarded to Gary Weyhrich in his Ford Geiser, who battled his way through the Nevada silt up from the 13th starting position. Steve Stroble brought his Trick Truck out from Clarks, Nebraska, and punched his way through the pack from 18th to the fourth overall. Jesse Jones qualified into a great starting position in third, but come race day Jones had a rough time after a few navigational errors and later a run in with a UTV. In spite of his issues, Jones still rounded out the top five overall.

The first Class 1500 vehicle across the finish line was Justin Lofton, who earned sixth overall in this year’s race. Finishing in second in Class 1500 was Corey Keysar, who was the only other race in the class to crack the overall top 10.

Once again the “Longest off-road race in the United States” was conquered by the Voss Motorsports team. So far, Voss has set the mark for a potential Championship run in 2014. The question is – can anyone catch him? Next up on the BITD schedule is the ever-popular Bluewater Desert Challenge in Parker, Arizona.
