Heikkinen Wins X Games Rallycross Supercar Final

After the dust settled at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California, Toomas Heikkinen earned the gold at the 2013 X Games Rallycross. As part of the 2013 Global Rallycross schedule, the win marks his fourth consecutive victory in the series and is his second consecutive X Games gold medal. Heikkinen edged out Tanner Foust and Sverre Isachsen in second and third, respectively, and built his points lead over Foust in the series.

"It's cool to have a lot of points," Heikkinen said. "Now we have a little bit less pressure, but there's still work to do. Everything is good right now, and I'm not doing anything else but smiling."

Finishing just off the podium in fourth place was Rhys Millen. Crowd favorites Travis Pastrana traveled to Irwindale after to completing a NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday came in fifth place. Ken Block, Brian Deegan, Patrik Sandell, Scott Speed, and Liam Doran rounded out the final.

The racers in the final earned their spots by finishing in the top two spots in heat races or by earning first or second in the last-chance qualifier (LCQ). In heat one it was Sverre Isachsen and Brian Deegan finishing first and second, respectively, to move into the final. Liam Doran and Patrik Sandell earned the top two spots in heat two. Heikkinen and Pastrana went 1-2 in the third heat, while Ken Block and Tanner Foust took first and second, respectively, in heat four.

Unfortunately off-road racer Bryce Menzies didn’t have a great day at Irwindale. He was unable to advance to the final after finishing third in his five-car heat race (only top two advance). He still had a chance to advance via the last-chance qualifier (LCQ), but after briefly moving into second place (the final advancing position) he was unable to correct a sharp turn coming onto the final straightaway and a crash into the wall ended his day. Rhys Millen and Scott Speed earned the final two positions in the final in the LCQ.

In the Global Rallycross Lites race earlier in the day, Joni Wiman took the win in the eight-car final, edging out the youngest driver in X Games rally history in Mitchell Dejong. Sebastian Eriksson, who was assessed a stop-and-go penalty during the race, finished in third.

"The track was very quick, so it was very difficult to drive the first three or four laps," Wiman said. "Then it was normal. In the hairpins, I saw the guys beside me, and I could see if they were catching me. I didn't know if they had done the shortcut, so the pressure was on."
