Daystar to the Rescue, or Up Yours!Project "Bleak Jeep"

Well, we had a small problem while installing the Atlas II transfer case from Advanced Adapters. As it turns out we had two problems, number one; the factory body mounts had seen better days and number two; the Skyjacker suspension really needed about another inch to prevent the tires from coming into contact with the wheel wells. Both problems solved with one call to Daystar. Check it out, we installed a replacement body mount kit with another inch courtesy of Daystar.

This disclaimer is included with the new body lift/bushing kit. READ IT!

This kit is so simple to install, a fifteen year old can do it. As long as he can loosen the partially rusted body mount bolts. We did one side at a time and worked slowly making sure that while jacking the body off the frame high enough to install the longer body mounts we did not pull any wires or hoses apart. It is unlikely that an extra inch will do this but it is better safe than sorry. I would highly recommend that you remove the negative cable from the battery. One more thing before proceeding, if you did any of your own wiring, off road lights, winch or whatever those wires may be tighter than the factory stuff, pay careful attention here. Thus endeth the sermon.

I wish there was more to show, however there really isn't the under body Daystar mounts install pretty much how you would expect. I can't tell you how important it is to thoroughly read the instructions before getting started though. There are some factory pieces that come off the mounts you need to retain and reuse. Once the one side is done leave the mounts loose and gather up your tools and head over to the other side. There a total of 11 mounts to deal with, 5 on each side and one in the front middle of the Jeep, Daystar includes plenty of hardware.

A quick rear view, notice the one inch gap between the rear frame and body. This kit was installed before the Goodyear tires and KMC wheels were mounted.

Here is the scene under the hood, remember you are raising the body, the frame does not move, thusly the engine does not move. The radiator is mounted to the body, not the frame. It must be lowered to match the amount you raised the body, in this case one inch. Here John is removing the four bolts that hold the radiator shroud to the radiator. We felt, as did Daystar the radiator itself didn't need to come down, only the shroud had to drop a bit to keep the fan from rubbing.

You can use a hacksaw, we opted for a hand grinder with a cutting wheel in it, the result is the same. You need to elongate the hole so you can drop the shroud one inch.

Ok, install the bolts, snug them down and rotate the fan to make sure there is no contact. Once you are convinced that will be no interference tighten everything down and go around the Jeep and tighten all the body mounts.

Wow! What a difference an inch makes. The tires are 32X11.50 in size, combine the 6 inches of lift from the Skyjacker Mono Linear kit and the inch from Daystar and we now have enough room for those 35" Goodyear M/T's. One other side effect was more room for our Atlas II T-Case which we were in the process of installing while our body mount problem cropped up.
