This is my 1977 K5, I call her the Beast, as in beast of burden.  She is required to fill multiple roles.  Daily driver, grocery getter, family station wagon (on occasion, I have a wife and 2 sons).  I also do some serious wheeling with her.  I don't care for mud, but hay, everybody has their own cup of tea.  Follow along as I show you the things that I have done to her already and as I upgrade her to be a better wheeler and daily driver.

I have done quite a bit to the old Beast already, if you have been following along in the Chevy section you will have seen my trip to Tellico and my Crossover Steering conversion.  I have been very busy on the old gal, lots of stuff to write about and lots of modifications to show.  I have done all the work to the Beast myself, except install the gears.  I dont have the special tools or experience to install these correctly, so I paid the experts to do it for me.  In addition to the mechanical work, I fabricated  almost all the items on my K-5.  The bumpers, the spare tire carrier/gas can carrier.  The winch cradle and the racks in the rear to hold everything down.  I have also fabricated a new cross-member with 1/2" thick skid plate for the transfer case.

  • 350 4 Bolt main eng. with Quadrajet carb.

  • Sm-465 Granny Low 4-speed Transmission (6.55 to 1 unsynchronized 1st gear)

  • Dana 44 Front axle with Lock Right Locker and 4.56 Genuine Gears.

  • 4" Rear lift, by flipping the stock shackles and using 87 K-5 rear springs that I modified and rebuilt.

  • 4" Front lift, Tuff Country 4" EZ ride front springs.

  • Poly bushings.  Body, Leaf spring, Shackle, not to mention Transmission mount, and Motor mounts.

  • 4.5" Poly bump stops at all 4 corners.

  • Custom Fabricated Front and Rear Bumpers/Front has Warn HS9500i winch.

  • Custom Fabricated Rear Swing Away Tire/Gas can Carrier.
