Sparks, NV – Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) unveiled its 2013 race series today, with a new date for the popular USA 500 and additional short course races at Prairie City outside Sacramento.

VORRA, celebrating its 38th year of racing, is one of the only off road series in the U.S. offering a mix of short course and desert races. Always looking to innovate, VORRA ran a 24 hour endurance race in 2011, introduced short course double-headers in 2012 and now is adding two more short course dates for 2013.

“We listened to our racers who said they wanted more short course racing and have added two dates – one in the spring and one in the fall,” said race series owner Wes Harbor. “We’ve also switched the USA 500 to Labor Day Weekend to accommodate teams with other commitments.”

Sparks, NV – Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) today announced a revised race schedule, following input and voting at the Association’s December 10 membership meeting.

The signature USA 500 desert race moved back to July, and members voted to continue with two double-header short course weekends at Prairie City following the success of this year’s season finale. VORRA also announced, following a vote by the membership, that head and neck restraint systems will be mandatory for all race classes in 2013.

“We’d initially moved the USA 500 to earlier in the year, but following discussions with our casino partners and the Bureau of Land Management, the original July race date worked out best for everyone,” said VORRA Race Director Wes Harbor. “We’ll be making more announcements on the 500 in the coming months, but racers can put it on their 2012 calendars for July 13-15.”

Teams attending VORRA’s annual rules meeting and awards banquet in South Lake Tahoe also endorsed proposals to consolidate short course racing into two double headers in April and October and to shift the date of the night race to later in September to free up Labor Day weekend for teams to spend with their families.

“Our first short course double-header earlier this year at Prairie City was a big hit with racers and fans,” Harbor said. “It’s also a recognition that everyone’s racing on tight budgets and consolidating the short course weekends reduces the amount of vacation time and fuel costs teams factor in to their racing seasons.”

The new VORRA 2012 race schedule is as follows:

April 13-15                Short Course Double Header        Prairie City, CA

May 26-28                Yerington 300 Desert Race        Yerington, NV

July 13-15                USA 500 Desert Race                Reno/Sparks, NV

September 8-9        Night Vision 250 Desert Race        Fallon, NV

October 26-28        Short Course Double Header        Prairie City, CA

Following a lengthy debate on the inherent dangers of off road racing and their desire for personal choice in using different types of safety gear, VORRA racers voted by a large margin to mandate head and neck restraint systems beginning in 2013.  The requirement will be for SFI 38.1 certified systems.

“After multiple severe back injuries in 2011, we had to reduce the chance of injury whenever possible,” Harbor said.  “Commonly known as HANS devices, many professional racing organizations worldwide require them in the wake of well documented deceleration injuries and deaths.  It’s only a matter of time until they became mandatory in the off-road racing world. We also recognize the expense of investing in this type of safety equipment and elected to extend the deadline for them to 2013 to give teams time to transition.”

VORRA has begun contacting equipment distributors to negotiate discounts for racers in advance of 2013.  One retailer has already agreed to offer a rebate program to VORRA, and VORRA has pledged $25 donations to Fast-Aid for every 2012 purchase from that retailer.

“I’m also going to offer entry fee discounts to racers who purchase any approved device in 2012,” Harbor said, “Our focus on fun, competitive and safe racing will live on.”

Sparks, NV - Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) unveiled its 2012 race series today, with plans to expand on the popular USA 500 and returning to Fallon, Nevada for a 250-mile night race.

VORRA, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2010, is one of the only off road series in the U.S. to offer a mix of short course and desert races. In 2011 series organizers added the USA 500 and “The 24” desert endurance race, during which winner Sam Berri recorded the longest desert race distance in the U.S., covering 1,024 miles.

“For 2012, we want to build on the success of the USA 500 and revisit a racer favorite, the Fallon 250 night race,” said Race Director Wes Harbor. “We’ll also be launching an expanded contingency program and doing proactive outreach to new racers.”

The 2012 series also includes four short course races at Prairie City OHV Park east of Sacramento, Calif., and the Yerington 300, one of VORRA’s most popular courses complete with the traditional parade down Main Street.

VORRA will also unveil an expanded contingency program with more sponsors and continue its one of a kind entry fee schedule that reduces fees as car counts increase. VORRA’s entry fees are already some of the most affordable in off road racing.

“We listened to our racers and designed the 2012 season to provide a challenging and diverse set of races that won’t break the bank,” Harbor said. “We’ll also be working to introduce a whole new generation of racers to the sport. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

Shingle Springs, CA – After a first place overall podium finish and winning the UTV1000 class at Round 1 of the Valley Off-Road Racing Association (VORRA) series, Jon Crowley seeks to DOMINATE Round 2 in his Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx 4×4 UTV.

The 2011 season is shaping to be a great season, as Jon holds the early points lead going into this weekend’s second short course race of the year at Prairie City OHV Park.  The 7-round series consists of 4 short course races and 3 desert races including the only 24-Hour Endurance race for UTV’s.

When asked about the 2011 VORRA season he commented, “This season will be tough and rugged. With a combination of short course and desert races, my Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx will be on its game, and the rest falls into my hands at the wheel.”

Jon Crowley is proving that his Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx is possibly the most versatile UTV in the circuit. His 999cc equipped MONSTER features a +4″ Funco Suspension set-up accompanied by Fox Racing Shox 2.0 DSC’s, which allows him to run and WIN in the same vehicle throughout the year.

Jon explained, “Where others have dedicated vehicles for short course or desert, we’ve found the right combination to be BETTER and FASTER in the same vehicle all year long. The Funco suspension is truly an all-around system that only requires some fine adjustments on the Fox Racing Shox. Muzzy’s Performance power is pushing me to the front, and no matter how much power I throw at them, the Pit Bull Tires keep on grabbing!”

This weekend’s race at Prairie City OHV Park, just outside of Sacramento, will be challenging, but the Crowley Off-Road Racing team knows that the Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx will be tough to beat. Follow and stay tuned to www.CrowleyOffRoad.com for the latest results, photos, and videos.
