Not long ago, Toyo Tires brought a new off-road tire to the market in the all-new Open Country R/T. We’ve had a chance to put the tire to the test ourselves and came away impressed (check out the review link below). As Toyo notes, the tire is designed for off-road performance blended with on-road comfort. The R/T is essentially made to be more in line with a mud-terrain in terms of off-road performance but more like an all-terrain in terms of being quieter and smoother on the highway than a mud tire.
Toyo Tires pulled the cover off its new off-road tire recently – but only a little bit. Off-Road.com was recently invited to get an early look at its newest off-road tire, the Open Country R/T, which won’t be available in dealers until September of this year.

San Bernardino, CA – Defending Pro 4 Unlimited Class Champion, Kyle LeDuc, won Round 10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at the Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA. LeDuc’s 900+ horsepower #99 Monster Energy / Toyo Tires Ford F-150 relies on Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires for grip. He posted a best lap time of 46.726-seconds around the undulating .8-mile short course race track which is constructed on the side of a mountain.
LeDuc defeated a field of 10-trucks to capture the top spot on the podium. This is LeDuc’s fourth trip to the podium this year, as he captured three second-place finishes so far this season.
San Diego, CA – Robby Gordon and Toyo Tires have won Round 5 of the Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) racing series during its return visit to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California this last weekend. This marked Gordon’s second win of the season with his #7 SPEED Energy/MAPEI race truck. With his combination of five podium finishes and two Fast Qualifiers, Gordon takes over the championship points lead with six races remaining in the 11 race series. It also marks the third victory of the 2013 SST season for Toyo® Open Country tires.
“San Diego No. 2 was definitely better for me than San Diego No. 1. I had a great battle with youngster Sheldon Creed with him pressuring me the entire race,” said Gordon. “It was a great race, these Toyo tires really worked well tonight, and I can’t thank all the fans enough for coming out and supporting us.”
LAUGHLIN, NEVADA – Team Toyo Off-Road’s newest member, “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin, won Saturday’s Round 1 of the 2012 SCORE Desert Series during the 18th Annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin, Nevada. Baldwin, from Las Vegas, Nevada, finished an impressive first overall and first in class with a one minute, six second margin of victory over the next finisher, Juan Carlos Lopez.
Driving his #97 Monster Energy / Toyo Tires Chevy Silverado trophy truck; Baldwin beat 98 other vehicles entered in the eight lap race with a time of 53 minutes, 45 seconds. This was Baldwin’s first-ever SCORE off-road race competing on Toyo® Open Country M/T®-R tires.
Baldwin was the number one qualifier for Saturday’s race, posting the fastest time of six minutes, 23.99 seconds during a single 6.25-mile lap sprint on Friday. During Sunday’s Round 2, Baldwin experienced a mechanical problem during lap two, sidelining his truck before the finish of the race.
“It’s 2012 and the end is near… for the competition! Our race season is already starting to blossom thanks to Toyo,” said Baldwin. “We qualified first by a mile and then easily won round one. Round 2 was going to be victorious as well if not for engine trouble. This year is going to be awesome for us now that we are running on the best off road tire. The Toyo Open Country M/T-R’s simply perform better!”
“We congratulate BJ Baldwin on his win during Round 1 of the 2012 SCORE Desert Series,” said Stan Chen, manager of events and motorsports, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. “This was his first time competing as a member of Team Toyo Off-Road, and he won immediately on our Open Country M/T-R tires. We are looking forward to an exciting desert racing season with BJ.”

CYPRESS, CALIFORNIA – Toyo Tires is in the history books capturing the win and a third place finish in Stage 2 of the 2012 Dakar rally. Nasser Al-Attiyah and navigator, Lucas Cruz, piloted their #300 Qatar HUMMER to the Stage 2 win. Al-Attiyah made a remarkable charge from the 38th starting position for his well-earned victory in the 290km Special Stage from Santa Rosa de la Pampa to San Rafael, Argentina. Robby Gordon and navigator, Johnny Campbell, finished in third in their #303 SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires HUMMER — Gordon now second overall in the Dakar. Both of the two-wheel-drive vehicles rely on Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires to deliver their podium finishes.
Gordon led the 57km Stage 1 of the rally from Mal Del Plata to Santa Rosa de La Pampa. Only 2km from the end of the stage, he came across teammate Al-Attiyah who was sidelined due to a loss of power. Gordon provided a tow to the finish of the stage, sacrificing a Stage 1 victory, but ensuring both vehicles would compete for the overall victory in the 14-stage, 9,000 kilometers (5,592 miles) Pan American race.
“This is a brilliant come-from-behind victory for Al-Attiyah and Toyo Tires in Stage 2 of Dakar,” said Amy Coleman, senior director of marketing, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. “And with Robby Gordon standing in second overall, we couldn’t be more pleased with how we are starting this world class event.”
Stage 3 heads toward the rugged Andes mountain range, where vehicles are faced with punishing rocks and bumps. This is the perfect environment for showing the prowess of Robby Gordon’s HUMMER race vehicles and their Open Country M/T-R tires.
