DETROIT, Mich. – E.J. Viso completed a weekend sweep of three Menards Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS races, taking Sunday’s race in front of a massive audience at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. Viso’s Momo/Gridstar truck dominated a weekend of thrilling truck racing.
DETROIT, Mich. – Adding even more excitement and bringing an extreme element to the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, it was confirmed today that the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) Series will compete at next summer’s event, May 30-June 1, 2014.
In only its second season and coming off a wildly-popular debut in 2013, the SST Series will compete on the 2.3-mile Raceway at Belle Isle Park street circuit with two races run during Grand Prix weekend. The high-flying trucks will launch from a standing start for each race and they jump ramps that will be set up on the Grand Prix race circuit.
With trucks expected to reach speeds in excess of 120 mph, launching more than 15 feet in the air and covering distances more than 75 feet on Belle Isle, the SST Series is unique in the sense that all trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in race-ready condition. Drivers do not have an advantage over others because they have a bigger budget or greater technology. Drivers are assigned SST crew members who make minor adjustments at a driver’s request. The rules are specific as to what changes are permitted on the trucks so that the technology in the trucks remains equal.
Costa Mesa, CA – Toyo Open Country tires helped racers capture two wins and a total of three podiums last weekend in Stadium SUPER Trucks (SST) at the Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa, California.
Team Toyo’s Robby Gordon started out by capturing the Round 11 race win on Friday, piloting his #7 SPEED Energy/MAPEI race truck from a fourth place starting position in the 12-truck field to the number one spot. He then followed that up with a second place finish Saturday in Round 12. With his two-consecutive podium finishes, Gordon sits in second place in the overall championship points for the inaugural season.
“It was pretty cool to be able to come here and race Stadium SUPER Trucks in Costa Mesa, California. It is a huge step forward for the form of off-road motorsports,” said Gordon. “I am also stoked that we could pull off another victory on our Toyo tires, and it’s pretty cool that Toyo Tires won two of the three events here at the Sand Sports Super Show.”
Charlotte, N.C. – Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD officials are honored to announce that the 2013 SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Champion will be the recipient of the Inaugural Mickey Thompson Championship Trophy, named in honor of the late championship racer, innovator, and promoter, Mickey Thompson.
Born December 7, 1928, in San Fernando, Calif., Thompson was an integral player in the West Coast drag-racing scene of the 1950’s. His most notable achievement during this time was the creation of the first slingshot dragster in 1954.
However, it was during Mickey’s time managing the Lion Drag Strip near Long Beach, Calif., he created some of the most innovative improvements in racing safety. The development of the ‘Christmas Tree’ starting lights that are implemented throughout drag racing today, took the human starter out of the equation. During the same period, it was Mickey’s idea to fill barrels with water to help absorb a car’s energy during a crash; the same safety technique is now used in Stadium SUPER Trucks competition years later.

With our series showcased in the best venues across the country, there’s no other place where this class can race and get this type of exposure.
