The Dakar 2011 will mark the third time in three years that the event will run in South America, and race organizers have already put together an official promotional video for the event. The 2011 race will through the countries of Spain and Chile. The race was traditionally known as The Paris-Dakar Rally, as the event took racers from Paris, France on to Dakar, Senegal. Unfortunately, the event was canceled in 2008 due to terrorist threats and concerns in France, which forced the promoters to find a new home for the race (and hence the change in name to simply “The Dakar”). In 2009, when the race moved to South America, it was the first time the race was not held in Europe and Africa.

Richard Hammond of the BBC television show Top Gear hosts an interesting, and somewhat surprising, battle with an off-road hill climb vehicle and a snowmobile charging across a lake. Yep, a lake. It’s pretty wild to see this Icelandic “Jeep,” made primarily for hill climbs, drive on top of the water. Hammond finds a driver crazy enough to try driving his 1 1/2-ton truck across a lake. Once that works, they challenge a snowmobile to which vehicle is faster.

As his team would note, it was just another day at the office for Scott Douglas and his  #7 AMSOIL Kumho Tire Baileigh Industrial Ford F-150 at the opening round of the TORC short-course off-road series from Crandon, Wisconsin. Douglas opened up the series with a solid weekend, as he made the podium in each of the three races he entered. In Pro 4×4 at Round 1 & 2, Douglas finished third, and for the Crandon Cup Pro 4×4 race he finished in first place in class and second overall, finishing a mere 0.259 second behind the winner.

Professional off-road racer Rick Huseman has been a force on The Off-Road Championship (TORC) circuit and the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series the last few years. He recently put together this video that highlights his four-wheel-drive short-course racetruck, explaining the features of the truck he built with his brothers. It’s an in-depth look at his truck from the inside out, and Rick talks about the difference between this truck and a two-wheel-drive short-course truck.

Robby Gordon was in contention for the overall win at the 2010 SCORE Baja 500 race in Ensenada, Mexico, but a busted transmission cost him an hour and half in repair time (or replacement time). He still managed to finish 13th overall.
