Moab veterans know that most days out in the area’s scenic southeastern Utah backcountry all go the same way: Family and friends have a great time, hopefully with no breakage or accidents, and they head back into town to enjoy an evening of food and drink while sharing interesting and often humorous tales of their adventures. Meanwhile, the odometer on their 4×4 will tell quite another story: 10.8 miles, or 35.7 miles, or, or… If the rig could talk, it would probably blurt out something like, “Really, dude? That’s all the farther we drove today?”

Come to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari, and this is the type of scenic beauty you can expect to witness. This is Plateau Dome trail, which rises 1500 feet above the Colorado River.

Not having been to Moab, Utah, for over eight years, I was intrigued when Off-Road.com editor Josh Burns offered me the opportunity to tag along for the 50th Anniversary Easter Jeep Safari and maybe enjoy some of the scenic and serpentine trails for which southeastern Utah is widely regarded as heaven to four-wheeling enthusiasts.

WE-Rock-Dirt-Riot-4-9-15BLACKFOOT, ID: The W.E. Rock Events/Dirt Riot event at AreaBFE in Moab, UT ended mid-race when a spectator was tragically struck.  The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has declared it an accident.  With the family’s blessing, the weekend’s racing results are being posted and the race series will continue onto its next stop in West Virginia.

“We are heart broken over the entire situation,” said Rich Klein, President and founder of W.E. Rock Events. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, the driver, co-driver and all the first responders that were on site to help. We appreciate everyone’s immediate response and how the entire W.E. Rock and Dirt Riot family has pulled together to support each other.”

The Easter Jeep Safari is a pretty unique and very cool event. Although there are informal business meetings at the event in Moab, cards may get swapped over meals or drinks, and much of Jeep aftermarket displays its latest gear at a trade show at the end of the week, but the event is also very much based in a love of off-roading. So pretty much everyone in attendance spends some time on the trail, because ultimately that’s what it’s all about.

Renegades on the trails in Moab? Why not!?!

Billionaire Donald Trump once said the two most expensive words in the world are “why not?” In some way, shape or form, practically every off-roader can understand this concept. For some this relates to the truly expensive questions, like why not put 40-inch tires on my Wrangler, or why not put a HEMI conversion in my JK? Or there are simpler ones, like why not try to climb that ledge, or why not use the “bonus” line? Logic need not apply to many of these questions. In fact, they often aren’t questions so much as statements. “Why not” isn’t asking for a counterpoint; it’s making a statement. It says: This is going to happen, and let the cards fall where they may.
