The legendary Parker “425”, the historic Mint “400” and the panoramic Silver State “300”…what better way to start the 2013 Best In The Desert season. These great venues, along with the attention Casey Folks pays to make sure everyone in every class has the best racing experience possible, are just part of what makes “The American Off-Road Racing Series” so popular. Now mix in the world’s foremost desert racers, and you have the perfect formula for the tightest, most competitive and exciting racing that has taken place the first half of the 2013 season.
Super competitive is an understatement among the Trick Truck teams so far this year. With the first three races in the books, there have been three different winners. Jason Voss claimed the victory at Parker, Bryce Menzies took the top spot at the Mint, and TJ Flores grabbed his first Trick Truck win ever at last month’s Silver State “300”. This “anyone can take it” racing has really made for a fierce battle in the class points chase as well. Currently, Jason Voss and Gary Wheyrich are tied for first, with Steve Olliges sitting in second, only 22 points behind. Scott Whipple and Troy Vest are in great position as well, and are ready to shake up the chase should anybody stumble going into the second half of the season.
San Marcos, CA – Congratulations to all participants in this year’s 2013 Tecate Score Baja 500 and a special thank you to Baja Designs’ Team Enlightened. Notably one of the toughest off-road races in the world, this year’s Baja 500 was an invigorating new format that stirred up the race right from the start.
New course sections, new series owner and new rules made for an especially exciting race. The 500 course was very technical, compared to recent years, which meant most race teams had no choice but to turn on their lights and drive through the night.
Baja Designs’ Team Enlightened earned a total of 19 podium finishes in 16 classes.
Last-minute decision making is something that most off-road racers have to be skilled at, but making a last minute call to race the #80 McMurrough Racing Unlimited Truck, was an easy decision for TJ to make. Coming fresh off their Silver State 300 win, the truck was ready to go for another round of racing.
The SNORE KC HiLites 250 took place this past Saturday night in Jean, NV. Running part of the Mint 400 course, this course made for a great desert race. With massive rocks, deep rolling whoops, and limited visibility due to dust and the race occurring at night, drivers were put to the test and over half of the entries were forced out.
The #80 Unlimited Truck was first off the line and the first to light up the 53mile course. A flawless first lap brought TJ and Stephanie back to the main pit in just 58 minutes where they would do a quick co-rider change and top off fuel. Just 5 miles into their second lap the #80 Unlimited Truck started to catch the slower classes. Patience was key to passing in the night, not wanting to go off course or hit any fellow racers, TJ picked his way through the field and laid down an even faster lap of 57minutes.
