Murrieta, CA – Factory FMF/Bonanza Plumbing KTM rider Kurt Caselli and Ivan Ramirez will return to San Felipe, Mexico to defend their SCORE/Baja San Felipe 250 title this coming weekend aboard their number 2X KTM race machine.

The two riders won the event last year aboard the carbureted version of the KTM 450 SX-F. Caselli and Ramirez have both been in Mexico for the last week alongside fellow KTM riders Mike Brown and Toby Price. Brown and Price will race on an identically prepared KTM 450 SX-F with the number 3X. All four riders have been pre-riding the course since the course opened to competitors last week.

“So far our riders have reported that the course is slightly different than last year but that they are happy with the changes,’ commented Team Manager Antti Kallonen. “We are looking forward to getting out front early and hopefully having a repeat of last year’s win.”

 

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey finished third overall on the KTM 450  in the opening round of the 2013 SX season at Anaheim on Saturday night and Germany’s Ken Roczen scored a podium second in the SX Lites West riding the KTM 250. In 2013 Marvin Musquin is contesting the SX Lites East competition.

While Dungey had solid practice times and survived several spills in his heat race to finish sixth to qualify for the main event of the night. He got off to a better start in the main and rounded the first corner in fourth to begin a four-rider battle for the lead with Davi Millsaps, Trey Canard and Justin Barcia. Dungey pressured Barcia for third for the first ten laps but when in striking distance he again when down in a small crash and lost some ground and valuable time. Then in the next lap it was Barcia who crashed and Dungey moved into third and held on to the podium spot to the checkered flag..

San Felipe, Mexico – The Bonanza Plumbing/FMF/KTM backed team of Kurt Caselli and Ivan Ramirez took home a long awaited victory in the 26th running of the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250.

The talented duo raced aboard the KTM 450 SX-F in 248.64 grueling miles of rugged race course to come out on top of the podium. It was the first overall victory for both riders and the third victory for the KTM brand in the history of the event. Ramirez also made history as the first native to win in his home country.

Caselli started for the team and moved into the lead shortly after the first 30 mile check. He had one small crash shortly after but recovered without losing the lead. He passed the bike off to Ramirez who quickly set to work to grow their lead. Meanwhile the second KTM team of Mike Brown and Quinn Cody were off to a decent start sitting in third position.

THR Motorsports ace David Pearson kicked off the AMA Racing/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series with a strong runner-up finish to defending series champ Kurt Caselli after a fast, dusty 45th Winter Classic hosted by the Desert Motorcycle Club in Lucerne Valley, California.

“Getting second overall at the first round behind Caselli [means you’re] pretty consistent and you’ve got to be consistent all year to have a chance at winning the championship,” Pearson pointed out.

Pearson was second off the start behind Caselli, but Destry Abbott snuck past Pearson in the early going, the five-time series champ putting in an inspired ride until brake issues popped up.

“I came into the pits [and] I was right behind [Abbott]; Caselli was probably 25 seconds ahead of him or whatever,” Pearson explained. “I went out on the second [loop] and put my head down and caught up and passed Destry. He didn’t have any brakes; I’m not sure when he lost them. I took a different trail than him and was able to pass him.

“From there, I just rode solid.”

It was business as usual for the two lead KTM factory riders, Cyril Despres and Marc Coma on Tuesday when riders set out for Stage 9 of the Dakar 2012 on a large arc from Antofagasta to Iquique in Chile. Despres, who had a dramatic day on Monday landing in a mud hole, went out like a man possessed, led throughout to claim the stage and reclaim the overall lead.

It was the French rider’s third stage victory in this edition. Coma has won four stages and with Stage Six scrapped, KTM has claimed seven of eight stages so far. Both riders are chasing their fourth Dakar Rally title and if either of them succeed it will represent KTM’s eleventh successive victory. The Austrian sports motorcycle specialist has shut out all the competition in every Dakar Rally since 2001 (the 2008 edition was cancelled).

Despres ended yesterday with a deficit of around 12 minutes after sacrificing the overall lead to Coma. The mud hole turned out to be a natural hazard that occurred after the final official inspection had been done by organizers and was not marked on the road book. Cyril and six other riders got stuck in the mud and race officials decided a detour was in order rather than deal with the obvious chaos. They later reinstated lost time to the riders disadvantaged and when they left on Tuesday Cyril trailed Marc by just over a minute.

It was with this in mind that he put down the hammer on his KTM 450 Rally bike and rode with a passion to lead throughout the special. His reward for such a doggedly determined ride was his third stage victory in Dakar 2012 to level with Coma’s three stages and a narrow lead in the overall standings.

When riders set out at Mar Del Plata on the Atlantic coast of Argentina on January 1 there were 178 in the start list of Dakar 2012. Now in Copiapo, Chile for the one rest day of the 2012 rally after nearly 4500 km the 33rd edition of the world toughest motor sports event it has again evolved into the tale of two riders: Cyril Despres and Marc Coma of the KTM factory team.

French rider Despres is in the overall lead with a cushion of almost eight minutes on teammate Marc Coma of Spain. But that is only half of the story. Third placed Helder Rodrigues of Portugal is almost 50 minutes behind Despres and that will be very difficult to overcome. Both KTM riders are attempting to win their third Dakar title and KTM, the Austrian sports bike specialist is looking at a potential eleventh consecutive title. KTM’s riders have one every edition since 2001, except in 2008 when the rally was cancelled on the eve of departure from Lisbon following security threats in North Africa. KTM also overcame a surprise change of engine size imposed by the rally organizers that reduced allowable engine size down to 450 cc. This was a move that was largely viewed as an effort to break the company’s stranglehold on the bike category.

Chilicito, Argentina: Following a navigation error yesterday, KTM factory rider Marc Coma rode with a passion in Stage Four to take his second stage victory in Dakar 2012 and claw back two minutes on overall leader and teammate Cyril Despres. Both riders are going for their fourth Dakar title.

Coma of Spain went off at sixth from San Juan but early registered his intention to be the one to beat by being fastest at the first Way Point of the day. Despres, first off in the morning to open the road after yesterday’s stage win was in third place just 15 seconds behind. Then came the day’s biggest climb when the two riders turned their KTM 450 Rally bikes and charged up the mountain that took them to their highest point so far in this, the 33rd edition of the world’s most famous rally. It was still Coma with the advantage at the end of the climb that took them up to 3200 m. Despres who later admitted he had taken particular caution to avoid any costly mistakes had slipped to sixth and was two minutes 49 behind.

Despres then went on the chase and had moved into second by Way Point three having halved the time deficit between him and the leader. The two KTM riders raced together for the rest of the day but it was Coma who crossed the line first to claim his second stage win in this edition. Despres finished just over two minutes later. The French rider is still ahead by 8 minutes 10 in the overall standings but Coma managed to make up a useful slice of the time he lost when he was forced to ride another 12 km following his navigational error in Stage Three. The stage is now set for a great battle now that the two KTM factory riders progressively distance themselves from the rest of the field.

Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey earned a remarkable 2nd place overall finish at his debut race on the KTM brand at the Monster Energy Cup held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.

After only two weeks on the new KTM 450 SX-F, Dungey geared up for the inaugural Monster Energy Cup race and went to work to see where he stacked up against the competition on his new bike.

The day started well when he turned the fastest lap time in the final practice session and earned first gate pick in heat number one. Ryan got off to a third place start in his heat behind leader Brett Metcalfe and Eli Tomac. Dungey’s teammate, Marvin Musquin, was sitting in 5th place on his KTM 350 SX-F. This race marked the first U.S. Supercross event for Musquin who was injured before the start of the 2011 Supercross season and unable to make his debut in his first year with the KTM team.

“I am very excited to be at this race,” commented Musquin earlier in the day. “I love Supercross racing and am excited for the 2012 season to start and I feel this race will serve as a great warm-up to the season.”

Musquin went on to finish 5th overall in the heat just one spot shy of qualifying straight to the main event. Dungey passed Tomac for 2nd with two laps to go and began to close the gap and pressure Metcalfe. On the final lap, Dungey moved on the rear wheel of Metcalfe and began to plan his pass. As they came under the tunnel, Metcalfe made a mistake and got sideways which allowed Dungey to get around and take over the lead. With two corners to go, Dungey pushed forward and took the heat win.
