Ultra4-Logo-9-16-13This letter was sent out last week from promoter Dave Cole regarding the Ultra4 National Championship Race. Since the letter went out, Ultra4 has sent another e-mail mentioning the TORC race in Primm from September 27-28 as a potential replacement. Here’s Dave Cole’s letter to racers:

I am writing this letter to all Ultra4 Drivers, fans, partners, and vendors.  The Ultra4 National Championship Race scheduled for 9/27/13 in Las Vegas has been canceled.  This is due to situations beyond our immediate control.  The Bureau of Indian Affairs operating permit that was being handled by the Land Manager will not be secured in time for either the Ultra4 or HDRA race.  I was notified yesterday at 11:00 AM PST and have been trying to find a resolution.

Mooneyham-ultra4-off-road-7-18-13TOOELE, UT: Driver “EZ” Rick Mooneyham is no stranger to the ULTRA4 podium.  Over the years, he’s been one of the most consistent top three finishers at the Griffin King of The Hammers Presented by Nitto Tire. However, despite all of his podium finishes, a first place trophy had proved elusive to Mooneyham; that is until last weekend’s American Rocksports Challenge held at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT where Mooneyham crushed the competition and claimed first place finishing nearly 45 seconds ahead of Shannon Campbell. The American Rocksports Challenge is thethird and final race in the Trail-Gear Western Regional ULTRA4 Series.

BIRMINGHAM, AL: Blue Torch Fab Jason Carner took his single seat Ultra4 car to the Southeast Dirt Riot race in Alabama and won just 3 weeks after competing in the King of the Hammers.  The vibrant and noticeable blue and white Miller Welders wrap on the car only lasted a short time before being covered with Alabama mud. “It was a good race, and I think if the weather had been better there would have been a better turn out,” said Carner.  “It was important to me to go down there and support the W.E. Rock group for bringing this event to our backyard.  It is my goal to win this Southeast Series, so this win helps put us on the top to start!”

It truly was a muddy mess, literally mud hole after mud hole at The Great American Park in Auburn, AL.  “The first couple tear offs worked, and then I grabbed a handful by accident and that was the end of those.  Then the wet rag only worked for so long, so it was quite interesting,” Jason laughed.  He drives a single seat car without a co-driver to help him navigate.  “Usually I don’t have too much problem with reading the GPS and racing, but on this course, it was marked so well that I really didn’t need it which was good because it got covered with mud too!”

JOHNSON VALLEY, CA – With just under a week until federal sequestration cuts are set to go into effect, the Secretary of the Navy is curiously seeking Congressional approval to move forward with base expansion at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California[1]. Spanning nearly 600,000 acres[2], the combat center is the largest Marine base in the world with a comparable land mass to Rhode Island. Despite strong public opposition and a potential sequester that will cut tens of billions from the Pentagon budget this year, the Marines are asking Congress to approve an acquisition of 168,151 additional acres[3]; roughly the land equivalent of the country of Singapore.

Johnson Valley, CA – BJ Baldwin has plenty to be proud of in his first attempt at rock racing. On a King of the Hammers, (KOH) course that was designed to create high attrition, only 27 out of 129 finished, he and co-rider Jake Yeoman placed a respectable 44th after battling the rocks and ruts for over eight hours.

With support from Monster Energy, Toyo Tires, Rigid Industries, Method Race Wheels, King Shocks, Lucas Oil, Hoonigan, Trent Fabrication, Trail-Gear, Yukon Gear & Axle and MJ motorsports, BJ had mounted a serious effort to compete for the crown. He took full advantage of his limited practice time on the brutally tough “Hammers” trails in Johnson Valley, California, qualifying 29th out of 100 in an unfamiliar car that is vastly different from the Monster Energy Trophy Trucks he has taken to numerous championships. His Trent Fab built car is four wheel drive with a huge transfer case to split the engine power to the massive straight axles front and rear. To provide adequate ground clearance, it has a high center of gravity and to articulate in the rocks, long shocks with soft springs. The car packs a long list of heavy-duty parts into the smallest package possible; driver comfort comes secondary.

DANVILLE, CA – Industry leading suspension manufacturer, Rubicon Express has announced it will be sponsoring professional off road racer, Jason Scherer.  The new partnership brings together a company that pioneered modern high performance suspension systems for Jeeps with a championship winning driver and race team. Both Rubicon Express and Jason Scherer are based in Northern California with strong roots wheeling on the famous Rubicon Trail. As their newest ambassador, Scherer’s Ultra4 single seat race car will be wrapped with the very recognizable Rubicon Express black and silver logo which will be debuted at next weeks 2013 King of the Hammers and continue its appearances at the three Ultra4 Western Series races.

Rubicon Express brand manager, Adam Trowbridge said, “We are very excited to have Jason Scherer representing Rubicon Express. His professionalism, sportsmanship, and reputation as an exceptional racer are a great match with our company and what we stand for. We are looking forward to kicking off the 2013 race season with Jason at the King of the Hammers.”

The popularity and buzz surrounding the King of the Hammers has reached a height none could have seen coming.

The 2012 edition of the race saw a new champion crowned by the end, as Maryland resident Erik Miller showed that the East Coast rock-crawlers have what it takes to tackle the brutal Hammer course.

In every genre of competition there is a prestigious cornerstone event that sets the standards. The appeal for thrill seekers is to conquer the momentous chore, bask in the glory, and enjoy the legacy. In its short history, King of the Hammers (KOH) has forged an international sensation that is declared the toughest off road race on the planet, combining brutal rock crawling with high-speed desert racing.

Lucas Oil Products recognizes the significance that this event holds in off road motorsports and is proud to support King of the Hammers as the “Official Oil of Ultra 4 Racing.” In addition, Lucas Oil will be sponsoring an Off Road Short Course Demo featuring a handful of stars from the Lucas Oil Off Road Series, aerial helicopter support, and a dedicated street in Hammertown labeled “Lucas Oil Lane” located near Vendor Row. Also noted, Lucas Oil’s support starts with the racers themselves. 2011’s 9th place finisher #4478 Les Figueroa, driver of the Lucas Oil/ Figspeed.com machine, will be taking on the competition to better last year’s top 10 finish.

New for 2012, a standalone hybrid cross country enduro event has been added the KOH Event Schedule, taking place on Thursday, January 9th 2012. Titled “King of the Motos,” this treacherous & technical invitational race is designed to rival the world renowned Erzberg. Lucas Oil’s Pro EnduroCross rider Colton Haaker, will be riding a 2012 Kawasaki KX™ 450F, going for the winner-takes-all $10,000 purse in an event where few would even dare to enter.
