Walker Fowler gave defending AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country ATV Champion Chris Borich a good battle, but when the checkered flag fell at the VP Racing Fuels Big Buck GNCC ATV race in South Carolina on Saturday, Borich once again emerged victorious, claiming his 70th career win and his seventh Big Buck win in eight years.
SNOWSHOE, W. Va. – Heavy rainfall consumed West Virginia’s Snowshoe Mountain the week leading up to Round 9 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series, but the wet racing conditions only lent a hand in paying homage to the series’ predecessor-The Blackwater 100-which offered up some of the most grueling terrain in cross-country racing. Walker Fowler conquered Saturday’s rough and tumble AMSOIL Snowshoe GNCC racecourse, besting points leader Chris Borich and the rest of the XC1 field by over two minutes.
The Snowshoe GNCC showcased a Blackwater-style concrete start, sending waves of five riders per row in increments of 10-15 seconds through the downtown village of Snowshoe Resort. AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler jumped out to the front on the opening lap and the Ohio native didn’t seem to look back from there. Borich had a small slip-up on the opening lap but the defending champion managed to put his Maxxis-backed Suzuki into the second place position early on where he set his sights on the leader Fowler right away.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Round 9 of the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series heads to Snowshoe Mountain Resort this weekend for the toughest, most spectacular and most unique race on the whole circuit, the AMSOIL Snowshoe GNCC. Four-time ATV champion Chris Borich leads the field into the final race before the summer break, but Saturday’s two-hour battle through the grueling woods of Snowshoe Mountain has the potential to shake things up in the XC1 class.
Set in the upscale ski village of West Virginia’s largest ski resort, this weekend’s Snowshoe GNCC promises to resurrect pieces of XC history with its live engine starts across the paved road located in the heart of Snowshoe’s village. The in town starts pay homage to the Blackwater 100-the original GNCC-where groups of five racers take off in five-second increments, making for a spectacular scene.
Because of the unique start and technical racecourse, the Snowshoe GNCC has been known to throw a twist in the race action. In fact, there have been three different overall winners at Snowshoe in the last four years. Maxxis-backed Chris Borich captured a hard-fought win over Reliable Tool Supply/Maxxis rider Chris Bithell in 2012, while Lonestar/Precision/ITP’s Adam McGill watched from the sidelines with a recovering injury. However, McGill took the Snowshoe victory in 2011 and that, coupled with his overall win at the previous round this season, could give McGill the momentum needed to make it two-in-a-row this Saturday.
MASONTOWN, W. Va. – Round 8 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series made a stop in Masontown, W. Va. on Saturday, where thousands of fans witnessed a spectacular day of ATV racing. West Virginia’s very own Adam McGill bested the current points leader Chris Borich in an exciting battle that came down to the final turns of the Parts Unlimited Mountaineer Run GNCC.
McGill began his day on the right foot, taking the $250 Team Woodhead/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award in front of his hometown crowd of friends and family. Four-Time GNCC Champion Chris Borich jumped into the second place position right away, while JB Racing/Can-Am’s Jarrod McClure began the afternoon in third. Reliable Tool Supply/Maxxis’ Chris Bithell and AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler also put themselves into the top five battle right way and the lead pack rode wheel-to-wheel on the opening lap.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (June 11, 2013) – The XC1 Pro ATV class has produced only two different winners in the first seven rounds of the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country season, despite some of the most highly contested lead battles in recent history. Reigning champion Chris Borich and runner-up Walker Fowler have dominated the center of the podium up to this point, but there’s a stacked field of pro riders waiting to secure a win in the remaining six rounds.
This weekend, June 15 and 16, the series heads to Masontown, W. Va. for the second running of the Parts Unlimited Mountaineer Run GNCC. Lonestar/Precision/ITP’s Adam McGill matched his best finish of the season with second place last round, giving the West Virginia native momentum heading into his home state this weekend. McGill experienced mechanical issues at the last year’s Mountaineer Run GNCC, so there’s no doubt that McGill is looking for redemption this time around.
MILLFIELD, Ohio – Round 7 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series made a stop in Millfield, Ohio for the 23rd running of the Wiseco John Penton GNCC. Chris Borich returned to his winning ways on Saturday, making a last lap pass on Adam McGill to secure his sixth win of 2013.
Eric Hoyland began his day by grabbing the $250 Team Woodhead/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award ahead of a stacked field of riders. It didn’t take long for the veteran front-runners to take the lead, beginning with Lonestar Racing/Precision/ITP’s Adam McGill, who crossed the line in first on the opening lap. Borich put his Maxxis-backed machine right behind McGill, while Reliable Tool Supply/Maxxis’ Chris Bithell, BNR’s Kevin Yoho and JB Racing/Can-Am’s Jarrod McClure followed close behind.
AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler and HMF/GBC/Yamaha’s Johnny Gallagher didn’t get a start out front but the Yamaha-backed duo quickly made their way through the pack. Fowler caught up to the leaders, where he engaged in a battle for a podium position with Bithell, Borich and McGill. A podium finish was in the cards for Fowler until he ran out of gas on the final lap, where he ended up finishing fourth overall for the day.
SPRINGVILLE, Ind. – Round 6 of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series descended upon the Lawrence County Recreational Facility on Saturday for the second running of the Dunlop Limestone GNCC. AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler broke defending champ Chris Borich’s five-race win streak this season by claiming his first victory of 2013, marking his second career win in the XC1 class. Additionally, Ohio’s Brycen Neal secured his fourth XC2 class win of the season in Indiana.
It was an exciting battle from start to finish in the two-hour Limestone GNCC as Fowler, Reliable Tool Supply/Maxxis’ Chris Bithell, Maxxis-backed Borich and Lonestar Racing/Precision/ITP’s Adam McGill challenged the race-win all afternoon. But it was Waynesburg Yamaha/GT Thunder’s Pickens who took the early lead, grabbing his second straight $250 Team Woodhead/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award. It wasn’t long before Fowler jumped out front, with the trio of front-runners close behind.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (May 15, 2013) – As the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country season approaches the midway point this weekend, 4-Time champ Chris Borich remains undefeated in the XC1 Pro ATV class with five consecutive wins under his belt. The series heads to Springville, Ind. this weekend for the Dunlop Limestone 100 GNCC, Round 6 of the series, where the fast-paced Indiana terrain could help level the playing field and allow a potential new race winner to end Borich’s dominant streak.
With 64 career wins to date, Borich has already proven his merit amongst the best XC ATV racers in GNCC history as he nears the all time wins record. Eight-Time GNCC champ Barry Hawk currently holds the record with 68 total wins, which is within reach for the consistent Borich as eight races still remain in 2013.
Reliable Tool Supply/Maxxis rider Chris Bithell could perhaps be the one to break his Suzuki-mounted teammate’s win streak, leading the champ for more laps than anyone else this season. Riding aboard an all-new machine and program for 2013, Bithell continues to become more comfortable each round and looks to secure a race win this season. Bithell currently sits third overall in the championship standings, only five points below AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (May 1, 2013) – When it comes to winning races, Maxxis-backed Chris Borich is as close to flawless as they come. The 4-Time GNCC champ has proven to outsmart and outlast his competition time and time again, sweeping the first four victories of the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series. Borich has a long season ahead in order to capture his fifth consecutive title, but the Pennsylvania native is also working toward a feat of his own as he continues to become one step closer to being the winningest GNCC racer of all time.
With 63 career wins to date, Borich is attempting to dethrone 9-Time champion Bill Ballance-who has 67 wins-to become the winningest ATV racer in GNCC history. Seven-Time ATV champ and 2003 bike champ Barry Hawk currently holds the all-time win record with a combined 68 wins between both disciplines, an achievement that could be reached and exceeded by Borich in 2013.
UNION, S.C. – After two plus hours of intense racing action at the VP Racing Fuels Big Buck GNCC, defending champion Chris Borich put his signature last-lap pass on teammate Chris Bithell to claim his fourth consecutive victory in 2013. Bithell came through only six seconds behind the leader and Walker Fowler put a valiant charge to claim the final XC1 podium position.
Things were aligned just right for Maxxis-backed rider Chris Borich on Saturday as he kicked off Round 4 of the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series in a big way, claiming the $250 Team Woodhead/DeRisi Racing Holeshot Award. However, Borich has made it apparent that he doesn’t like to lead the race early on and that’s when the 4-Time champ went into reserve mode.
