Lucas-Oil-Logo-11-21-11The series is now at its halfway point, and a lot is going on in the minds of the drivers and crews of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO. For some, the choice may be to start throttling back, going for more certain solid points finishes that will help preserve the high positions they’ve gotten up to in the points. For others, the more appealing option may be to go for the gusto, to try and score big as they try to make up ground they lost in the early going. And for a select few, the choice will be to go for it despite their good standings; to continue to hold the hammer down. Why slow down when going fast has been working so far? No matter the approach, it all made for great racing here at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT, as the crowd was treated to one of the most enthralling, and in some cases controversial, afternoons of racing in recent memory. The drivers really put on a show, and the fans voiced their approval with enthusiasm that was louder and more positive than this reporter has ever seen at a short course race.

Lucas-Oil-Logo-11-21-11It was an absolutely gorgeous day here at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT, and the fans packed the stands in droves for Round 7 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO. All afternoon, spectators were treated to a succession of fantastic races, and were regularly screaming from the edges of their seats as they watched with excitement. With surprises and close racing abounding throughout, many of the usual suspects were up to their old tricks here today, but there were also a few drivers who’d either been down on their luck, lacking experience in a new class, or just plain new to the sport, who also tasted success in Round 7. Ultra-4-Nelson-5-31-13SAN BERNARDINO, CA: Last weekend’s 4 Wheel Parts Glen Helen Grand Prix marked the third annual ULTRA4 race held at Glen Helen Raceway and the second annual win for 2012 Nitto Tire National Champion, Nick Nelson.  It was the largest regional ULTRA4 race to date with 80 cars registering, 66 of which competed in the unlimited 4-wheel drive class known as ULTRA4.

Over the course of two days, drivers competed in a series of qualifying and preliminary races on a 3 mile course filled with hill climbs and tight turns which also featured the Lucas Oil short course at Glen Helen. Ultimately, 66 drivers were narrowed down to the top 40 cars for Saturday’s main event. Many drivers were not only looking for a win but also hoping to earn a coveted qualifying spot in the 2014 Griffin King of The Hammers Presented by Nitto Tire. Only 13 of the 66 drivers registered for the event were already qualified for next year’s race KOH.

Jason-Scherer-Stampede-5-23-13DANVILLE, CA – Jason Scherer is antsy and excited to race this weekends Ultra4 4 Wheel Parts Glen Helen Grand Prix race coming off the NorCal Stampede Win.  “I am excited to go to Glen Helen and represent Rubicon Express in the backyard of 4 Wheel Parts Corporate headquarters, both have been a great support of the team this season!” said Jason Scherer, driver of the Rubicon Express #76 car.  “I have been out testing twice since the Stampede and I have got some things figured out finally, let’s just say that.”

Fishmouth Fabworks has spent a lot of time prepping the car after the Stampede with Brian Farris setting up new differentials for this race.  Fox Shox built custom shocks for the IFS car and Pac Racing Springs complimented the setup with new springs.  Scherer will be trying some new parts from PSC to develop even better steering for the Ultra4 series.  “We are grooving up the Nitto Tires and are going to be trying out some new Tireballs that are designed for short course this weekend, we are the guinea pigs but I’m confident that they will be solid,” said Jason Scherer.  “The whole team has really come together over the last few weeks including my brother Casey Scherer, Greg Hussey, John Webb, Ben Ratto, Ole Stortroen, Chad & Brett Lujan among others.  The fun part was having racers that aren’t prepping their cars for this race come over and help.  They knew that ‘this bolt needed to be locktited’ and ‘that needs to be marked’.  It was really awesome and appreciated, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

BJ-Baldwin-BITD-Mint-3-20-13Las Vegas, NV – BJ Baldwin is looking forward to getting back to full speed this weekend at Best In The Desert. BJ managed to finish in 12th place at the Mastercraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 despite a mechanical issue discovered during pre-race testing. The mechanical issue emerged just a few hours before the race took place, which left little time to correct it. BJ was able to compete but was not up to full speed on raceday. With the mechanical issue fixed, it will give BJ and the crew a chance for redemption.

“That’s racing; we were able to finish the race but we didn’t have the truck we needed to stay with the leaders,” said BJ, “We did our best to get some valuable points towards the SCORE Desert Series and the World Championship of Desert Racing points battle. We are back at 100% and really looking forward to the Mint 400. My truck Rampage is ready to go and it’s always good to be racing in our own back yard. The Mint 400 has been a big part of Las Vegas history. We have won it in the past; it would be great to add another Mint 400 victory to our record.”
