It’s a different approach than we’re used to, especially in the truck market, but Chevrolet isn’t looking to be the loudest, toughest kid on the block. In fact, while toughness is vitally important to its truck line, it isn’t aiming to be the loudest boaster of all the truck makers – it’s actually aiming to be the smartest by focusing on the heart of the market. That’s the goal with its new 2017 Silverado HD, and specifically the new fifth-generation Duramax L5P engine that powers it. Chevrolet feels its heavy-duty trucks are focused on the core of the market and improving the experience for the masses. It’s not worried about having the biggest headline grabbing numbers.

At a press event today at the Texas Motor Speedway, Chevrolet announced the performance numbers for its new L5P Duramax diesel engine for its HD trucks. The new diesel engine will produce 445 horsepower and 910 lb.-ft. of torque.

Chevy says its new fifth-generation Duramax power plant will provide an increase of 19 percent more torque than the previous generation, 12 percent more horsepower and 35 percent fewer emissions. Chevrolet says it’s looking to improve the capability of its new diesel engine without compromising its abilities. Chevy says its new 6.6-liter Duramax is practically a new engine, featuring an all-new cylinder block and rotating assembly, along with the GM-developed control system. Chevrolet also says the low-rpm torque hasn’t changed on the new engine, as it still provides 90 percent of its peak torque at only 1,550 rpm and sustains it up through 2,850 rpm for consistent pulling power at low speeds.

We’ll have the chance to take a short test drive with the new Duramax engine at the Speedway later today, so check back tomorrow for more technical detail and our ride impression of the new Duramax.
