SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIF – The year was 1967. The place was the Tijuana Bullring By The Sea. The occasion was an eclectic group of pioneers gathering for the first professional off-road race in history – the inaugural NORRA Mexican 1000.
Toward the end of the week at Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, some Jeepers take a break from the trail for a few hours to check out the newest gadgets and gear at the Spanish Trail Arena. Aftermarket vendors show off their latest and greatest, and we cruised the floor to check out the show and put together a collection of new products from this year’s EJS.
The Jeep Switchback is an interesting blend of currently available parts, potential Mopar offerings, and maybe a few things we’ll see on the Wrangler JL down the road.

Speed is typically not your friend on rugged, slick rock trails, but torque and horsepower are something every Jeep enthusiast can appreciate, and so in conjunction with its unveil at the New York Auto Show, Jeep unveiled the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in Moab, Utah during the Easter Jeep Safari. This new Jeep is hailed as the quickest, most powerful SUV ever.
It’s not everyday you get to hop in the passenger seat of a living legend’s Jeep, but that’s what happened when I grabbed a ride in Off-Road Hall of Fame member Curt LeDuc’s Skyjacker JK today at the Bestop trail run at Area BFE. It was a very full house today at Area BFE, as multiple trail runs were scheduled for the off-road park just outside Moab. Luckily for us, Bestop invited us to join their run and we were the first on the trail.
Johnny Cash’s car in “One Piece at a Time” is built from parts he snuck out of a Cadillac plant. The Jeep CJ66 has a somewhat similar story, as it is constructed of a combination of different CJ and Wrangler pieces, and just like the Man in Black’s ride this Wrangler is definitely one of a kind.
