Bi-State-Sage-Grouse-Decision-Off-Road-6-1-16BOISE, ID — Sharetrails.org/BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC), a national trail-based recreation group, recently slammed the decisions that would severely restrict off-highway vehicle (OHV) events and trail improvements in many areas in eastern California and Nevada.  The changes, in the name of sage grouse management, were demanded by a handful of preservationist special interest groups.

Some of the many historic OHV routes in the Pine Nut Mountains BRC’s concerns focus on final decisions announced late last week related to the Greater Sage-grouse Bi-State Distinct Population Segment (DPS), involving public lands in Nevada and eastern California.  The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Plan amendment includes approximately 426,809 acres of bi-state DPS habitat managed by the Forest Service.  The BLM’s Nevada California Greater Sage-Grouse Bi-State Distinct Population Segment Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA)/Record of Decision (ROD) includes about 280,000 acres of public land located in Douglas, Esmeralda, Lyon, and Mineral counties in Nevada and Alpine and Mono Counties in California.

Blueribbon-THUMB-Coalition-Idaho-deep-creek-range-8-7-15The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (NRA) is announcing the availability of the proposed action for the Big Wood Travel Management Plan. The purpose of this plan is to bring road and trail use into compliance with the Forest Plan, laws, and regulations; to provide a system of roads and trails for public access and recreational travel; to manage resource impacts that are occurring due to the use of roads and trails; and to rehabilitate non-system routes identified as a problem to natural and cultural resources (soil, water, fish, plants, wildlife, heritage, etc.).

This proposal would revise the existing Motorized Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the Big Wood Watershed to meet changed conditions. The majority of routes represented on the existing MVUM would remain open to the public. Some new routes would be added, while others would be closed and naturalized or restricted to administrative or other authorized uses. Other changes include installing barriers or gates on ski trails, designating dispersed camping areas, upgrading and adding parking areas, converting roads to non-motorized trails, rerouting one motorized trail, and reducing the length of routes that encroach upon sensitive areas. This project is being analyzed in compliance with the 36 CFR 212 Travel Rule.

AMA-logo-230PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The proposed 2017 Renewable Fuel Standard volume requirements announced today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would increase the mandated amount of ethanol in the nation’s fuel supply chain, despite a low demand for higher ethanol blends and an inadequate distribution and sales network, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

The EPA’s proposed Renewable Volume Obligations call for 18.8 billion gallons of biofuel for 2017, up from 18.11 billion gallons this year. The obligations for 2015 were 16.93 gallons.

The AMA opposes any increase in the Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard.
