IRVINE, Calif. — Kawasaki is celebrating 50 years in the U.S. in 2016. The company noted in a press release that yesterday exactly 50 years prior, on March 1, 1966, American Kawasaki Motorcycle Corp. (AKMC) opened for business in Chicago. The company resided in a modest sales office at 208 South La Salle Street and a two-story parts warehouse at 2860 North Lincoln Avenue. Formerly the site of a meat-packing plant, the warehouse needed serious renovation, but the price was right for a company trying to gain a toehold in a vast new country. Welcomed by Tony Watanabe with Ted Tazaki, who led the charge to establish the Chicago office, just 50 people attended the grand opening, held at the nearby Continental Hotel. But it was the right crowd, including the banks, trading companies and distributors that would support the company’s early efforts in America.

A staple in Orange County since 1969, Kawasaki reaffirms its commitment to the community with a new 15-year lease on a 200,000 square-foot facility just four miles from its current location in Irvine. Kawasaki celebrates its 50th Anniversary in the U.S. in March, 2016, and will move into the fully-renovated complex in Summer 2016.
“Our purpose in securing a new corporate headquarters is centered around two primary objectives,” said Masa Nakagawa, President and CEO, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. “First, with more than 300 of our staff being based in or around Orange County it is critical that our new location remain central to the community. In this new position, Jacobs will be responsible for the strategic development of Kawasaki’s government and fleet sales initiatives with the primary purpose of growing brand awareness for Kawasaki side x side vehicles, while increasing side x side business for KMC and its independent dealer network.
