AUTO - DAKAR 2018 - PART 2

As the 40th Dakar Rally charges into stage 12 out of 14, it’s time to catch up on how each competitor is doing.

The battle in the dirt bikes has been very close, with just seconds separating the leaders for a number of stages. But if this year has proven anything, it’s that experience doesn’t protect you in this brutal race. The leader in the bikes, Adrian Van Beveren, suffered a crash on stage 10 just a few miles from the finish line and has been forced to retire.

Joan Berrada, second in the dirt bikes, decided to retire on the 11th stage of the rally after nursing a knee injury over a number of days.

In the cars, the race has heated up, as a lead of over an hour has evaporated for Carlos Sainz, who is now in second place, trailing by just about four minutes to Bernhard Ten Brinke.

The race hasn’t been without drama either, as a quad rider claims he was hit by Carlos Sainz. Sainz was assessed a ten-minute penalty for the incident and now the quad rider is threatening legal action against Sainz.

As for the side-by-sides, the Polaris of P. Garrouste is holding off four Can-Am models, with the closest competitor trailing by about seven minutes.
