A new FX4 Off-Road Package for the 2018 Ford Expedition has been announced that transforms the full-size SUV into the most capable Expedition to date.

The most important component in the FX4 package is Ford’s patented electronic limited-slip rear differential. The e-diff improves grip in low-traction driving scenarios by distributing power to the wheels as needed, and with a lower 3.73:1 gear ratio, it also improves the Expedition’s towing performance.

Other content in the FX4 package includes off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires with thicker sidewalls, model-specific 18-inch Magnetic Metallic cast aluminum wheels, chrome running boards, FX4 badging, and new rubber floor liners that can be easily cleaned of mud or dirt. There are also seven different skid plates to protect the vehicle’s steering components, engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank along with a “sand shield” to keep debris out of the turbochargers and the intercooler.

In addition, the Expedition FX4 features Ford’s Terrain Management System found in the regular versions of the SUV. The system allows the vehicle to easily adapt to changing driving conditions with a normal mode for driving around town, a grass/gravel/snow mode for loose terrain and a sand mode for low traction situations. The system also features normal, sport, eco, and towing modes.

The 2018 Ford Expedition lineup, including the Expedition FX4, will hit U.S. dealers this fall. Pricing has yet to be announced.
