If the Toyota FT-4X Concept makes it to production, it could be called the TJ Cruiser.

The Toyota Motor Corporation has filed a trademark for the name TJ Cruiser with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for use on “Automobiles and structural parts thereof.”

Recently, Toyota showed us the FT-4X Concept, a compact crossover that is meant for urban adventures, not the rock-filled Moab runs that Toyota’s FJ Cruiser was built to tackle. Toyota wants to cash in on the crossover boom and this would be the brand’s second offering in the compact crossover segment, joining the C-HR. In comparison, the TJ Cruiser would offer a little more off-road capability and more usable space while being nearly the same size.

Toyota said it would wait and monitor the reaction to the FT-4X (shown above) to see if it is ready for production, and while it may have disappointed some of the hardcore off-roaders, the market for so-called casual core enthusiasts who like to visit national parks on the weekend is much larger. The new crossover will ride on Toyota’s TNGA C-Platform, shared with the Prius and C-HR.

It certainly makes sense that Toyota wouldn’t call this new crossover the FJ Cruiser, as it would be disingenuous and upsetting to plenty of FJ Cruiser fans. But why not capitalize on the already popular FJ Cruiser name with a variation like TJ Cruiser?

If it comes to fruition, expect the styling to be toned down and for some of the gimmicky concept features, like the armrest that doubles as a sleeping bag, to be removed, although that’s not to say that some of the innovation seen on the FT-4X, like the split folding rear tailgate, won’t be offered.
