Safety in a family SUV is an important aspect for many buyers, so those looking at adding a new 4×4 family vehicle in 2017 will be interested in knowing that Jeep’s 2017 Grand Cherokee 4×4 has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is the highest single rating in NHTSA’s vehicle-evaluation program.

The five-star rating for the Grand Cherokee comes after its performance in NHTSA tests that simulate frontal collision with another vehicle, side impact with another vehicle, side impact with a pole. According to a press release from Jeep, the Grand Cherokee 4×4 earned a five-star mark in each test.

Jeep touts the 2017 Grand Cherokee’s more than 70 available safety and security features, with standard equipment that includes: advanced multistage, driver and front-passenger air bags; advanced side-curtain air bags; advanced supplemental front-seat side air bags; and a driver-side inflatable knee bolster.

Jeep says that its restraint systems are critical to its safety strategy, but that crash-avoidance technology is also a high priority, and it will offer an Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system called Full-speed Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation as an option. The system requires cameras and radar to work in unison for object detection to deploy the Full-speed Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation for added precision. If a frontal impact with another vehicle appears imminent, the system pre-fills the Grand Cherokee’s brakes and transmits audible and visual warnings to urge the driver to react to the situation.

Jeep also notes the system will take safety a step further by expelling that “if the driver remains unresponsive and frontal collision risk remains, the Grand Cherokee’s brakes are applied to slow the vehicle before impact.” The system may bring the vehicle to full stop if an imminent frontal collision is detected at speeds below 25 mph.

For its high safety ranking, Jeep notes this is the fourth consecutive year the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4×4 has earned a five-star safety rating from NHTSA. Pricing for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4×4 starts at $32,695 (not including destination). For more information, visit Jeep.com/grandcherokee.
