For Jeep enthusiasts who have been clamoring for a new Jeep pickup truck, it appears your wish may be granted.

According to a recent story by Automotive News, a Wrangler-based pickup truck is being developed as a 2017 or 2018 model. The story touches on an interview with CEO Sergio Marchionne in late August, where he outlined the plan to keep producing Jeep Wranglers in the current Toledo, Ohio, plant and then move the production of the Jeep Cherokee to a nearby state, a move that would open up production expansion for the Wrangler and the new pickup.

FCA features two different plants at its Toledo Assembly Complex, with the smaller of the two being a body-on-frame plant that builds the Jeep Wrangler while the larger one focuses on building the unibody Cherokee. The plan would be to convert the unibody plant into a body-on-frame assembly, and this would be where the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler would launch.

“We found a solution that accommodates a variety of other interests to us because of the way in which we can move some product around,” said Marchionne in the report. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist [to know] that the only way I can move around the Wrangler is to move it into the other Toledo plant.”

The formal details of the plan are expected to be announced later in September.
