Nissan to Equip Next-Generation Titan Pickup with New Cummins Tu
Back in late 2013, Nissan announced some big news when it said its next-generation full-sized pickup would feature a Cummins V8 turbo diesel engine. At the time, only limited details were shared, such as the fact that it will be a 5.0-liter V8 born of a partnership between Nissan and Cummins, that the new motor will feature a horsepower rating of more than 300 and a torque rating in the 500 lb-ft range, and that there will be a commercial vehicle option as well.

Divisional Vice President, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Service & Parts for Nissan North America Fred Diaz highlighted the reasons why Nissan chose to go in this direction back in 2013: “We have done our homework on the next-generation Titan. Truck owners told us there’s a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn’t require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup. There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration.”

Nissan says its Cummins turbo diesel motor will produce over 300 hp and a torque rating in the mid 500s.

It’s been over a year since that news was first announced, and the biggest question has been when more details would come to light on the new Titan, especially in regards to the new Cummins motor. Nissan recently confirmed to Off-Road.com that the next-generation Titan will be unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January of 2015. We don’t know if any additional information will be shared beforehand, but we know this will be the first time the public will see the new Titan.

Nissan believes its 5.0-liter Cummins motor will drawn in new customers for its next-gen full-sized Titan pickup.

While we wait until January for more info on the diesel-powered Titan, we know a few other details on the new truck, such as the fact that there will be other powertrain options as well as cab-and-box configurations for broader market appeal. As for the construction of the new truck, Nissan said the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel will be built in at the Columbus Engine Plant, in Columbus, Ind., Cummins headquarters. On the Titan side, the trucks team is led by employees at Nissan Americas’ headquarters in Franklin, Tenn., with engineering and testing is performed by Nissan Technical Center North America in Farmington Hills, Mich. and Stanfield, Ariz. as well as Nissan’s global engineering center. Design for the new Titan is being led by Nissan Design America in La Jolla, Calif.
